[The journal sits in Kaito's lap, propped open but turned to an empty page, for quite some time before he actually starts writing in it.]
A death sentence seems like a bit much for the crime of piracy, huh. . . tch. And they're supposed to be the law enforcement of this world? Gimme a break. Some law enforcement that is.
[Someone is highly against killing as a form of punishment, if that much wasn't obvious. His existing bias against law enforcement doesn't help matters, either]
Everyone, be careful out there, yeah?
[He flips a page when he's done writing, and starts a completely new entry, but not before asking his journal politely to filter it to those on his crew]
[Private to The Shepherd]
Oi! We're going after that shard, right? Near Stone Nest? We'd better hit the ship tomorrow if we wanna make it there in time!

[But for some reason, seeing it in action here makes what the history books said about it much more real]
Maybe people will be more careful from here on out.
Re: written
Someone's going to need to run interference with the navy at some point if there going to be so aggressive. We need to learn a little more about them first.

And a man knows that going into it. What did ye think, they slap you on the wrist and tell ye never to do it again?
[voice]
No, I thought they sentence everyone to three weeks' community service. I know-- I know it's the standard punishment, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. That's a life they're taking away.

Theft and plunder committed can cause not only political imbalance but even war. If a navy can't enforce its territories then it can hardly be considered a proper navy at all. Those who commit piracy know bloody well that they might die at sea in a storm, in a battle, or by the hands of any official navy guarding the world's waters.
It isn't pretty I will admit, but it is a consequence one must accept.

[still, it leaves a bad taste in his mouth]
I just have a hard time believing anyone out there would deserve to die.

A severe crime requires a severe deterrent.
It's not as if you have to relish it, heavens no; but accept it as a part of that sort of life.

[Because writing makes it easier to hide what he's thinking, how shaken he still is by what he heard.]
You all be careful, too.
[He can hope this recent revelation will make Maribelle a bit more cautious. Keep her from seeking out the navy in this world to prove she isn't a pirate.
Somehow, he doubts they'd listen.]

As always. We haven't gotten into any trouble yet, and I don't think we plan on it.

Now, if you're not feeling too down, I want to bring up those written symbols you found on that island. Has anyone made any leads so far?

[He doesn't mind the change of subject though, and he jots down his answer quickly]
No breakthroughs yet. I think we're missing quite a few symbols for a complete alphabet, but I know Robin-san and Edogawa-kun were also trying their hand at deciphering the language.

[ While Aoko would usually respond via audio . . . after that, she doesn't trust her feelings not to get the better of her.
She tap her pen against the journal lightly, before dashing off: ]
If Maribelle-san doesn't want to go after it, maybe we can go by ourselves.

[It may be a bit harsh, but it was the law of the land, or uh, sea out here. Keep focused on the goal and worry about the details later. Not much they could do right now either way.]
I appreciate the concern either way. It might be better to not worry about the Navy so long as we keep our distance and focus more on protecting our crews.

[law of the land or not, Kaito found it difficult to just accept things as they were without at least speaking out. He was never one to sit around quietly when something bothered him. . . if he had been, Kaitou Kid would never have been revived]
Yeah, that was my idea. Scurvey Dog's good at keeping us updated on their whereabouts. As long as we avoid 'em, we should be fine.
