I think parents are always proud of their children. It's just harder for some parents to show it.

My mother...passed...when I was young. She was...

Pretty wonderful.

Since then, my Dad has basically raised me. [Though sometimes it's like she's raising him.] He's...overly-affectionate sometimes.
