It's not even a particularly nasty island, but this town is full of people who don't want anything to do with him-- and he doesn't want anything to do with them, either. Plus, when he asked about people dying, he got a door slammed in his face. Rude.

Having figured out that the journal is capable of both recorded and written communication, he's taking advantage of it while he lingers in the town square.]

Is there no one on this island who knows how to operate a boat? I have enough money to buy a small ship, but hiring crewmen is impossible. These people won't even take gold for it. This is a seaside community; having no one who will steer a boat makes no sense. They're avoidant on purpose.

[He hmphs a bit.]

Finding a company of competent people is going to be harder than I thought.

Before you suggest it, I'm not about to sneak onto someone else's ship, nor am I interested in working with a bunch of idiots who've probably never ran a mission in their lives.

That said, there's plenty of folks out here who have done that and more.

But there's plenty of people who have ships already. With crews and space to spare and everything. So you could just join up with one of us.

I'm not interested in taking orders, let alone from someone without any kind of real experience. One wrong move means endangering the lives of those under your command. I can take that risk, but not everyone can.

[Inwardly Asbel groans.] ...Yeah, that. Well, you know where I mean.

[And don't worry, Asch. The kid's internalizing that part about "endangering lives".]

I get what you're saying, but it's not really about taking orders, you know? You have to work together to get a boat that size to actually go where you want it to. If it was listening to someone else shout commands all the time, I'd have given up on that ages ago.

[That sure sounds like a Fabre coming from the journal. He can't tell which one, but it sounds grumpier than the Fabre he's used to being around.]

[... This isn't the way he imagined it going. Honestly, he hasn't spoken to Guy or even seen him since that last day in Grand Chokmah, and he preferred to keep it that way. Being around him hurts more than Asch cares to admit. Just having his voice come in over the journal is enough to give Asch pause.

He steels himself against all the mixed feelings. Part of him wants to lash out so terribly, but in the end he doesn't really have any fight left. He doesn't want to fight with Guy. And there's no reason, not anymore.]

[He's sort of surprised Asch actually responded, considering they hadn't parted on the best of terms. Definitely not friends. But they'd been temporary allies for a while--at least from Guy's point of view--and Asch was the most familiar thing in the area at the moment.]

[Asch takes a full step back, trying to dodge her if she decides to do something physical.]

[Wow. Only a day here or so and he's already buttfurious, fannyflustered, and rearseared.]

[She skids to a halt just as she's about to throw her arms around him, clapping her hands onto her ears. Ow, her eardrums.]

[But at least she knows for sure who this redhead must be now. She considers hugging him anyway, but his murderous expression makes her think better of it. She hadn't lived this long without having good survival instincts!]

[She clasps her hands in front of her instead, striking a cute pose.]

Hey, Asch! [And then she immediately switches to looking annoyed.] You didn't have to be so loud.

I can see how selling ships would get us off the island faster, but not everyone is stupid enough to take one out of port without experience.
