[Asch has been stuck on this island for one night and he already hates it. It's not even a particularly nasty island, but this town is full of people who don't want anything to do with him-- and he doesn't want anything to do with them, either. Plus, when he asked about people dying, he got a door slammed in his face. Rude.
Having figured out that the journal is capable of both recorded and written communication, he's taking advantage of it while he lingers in the town square.]
Is there no one on this island who knows how to operate a boat? I have enough money to buy a small ship, but hiring crewmen is impossible. These people won't even take gold for it. This is a seaside community; having no one who will steer a boat makes no sense. They're avoidant on purpose.
[He hmphs a bit.]
Finding a company of competent people is going to be harder than I thought.

[Kind of a jackass thing to say, but at the same time, he's not using the harsh tone he's taking with the others who responded.]

Hey, no need to worry about me; I can see just fine! Besides, I'm one of the better climbers on the ship. And you've gotta use the ropes, anyway, if you want to look at stuff far away.
I do a little bit of everything, but my official titles are Assistant Exploration Advisor and Junior Welcoming Committee Chairman.
[He might have made up these titles himself. Details.]

... Are those supposed to be real titles?
[He scoffs lightly.]
I bet you swab decks all day.

Yeah, of course they are. Just because they're titles doesn't mean they have to be all boring-sounding. [Like all that "Young Master Asbel" crap. Blech.]
[There's a distinct note of frustration here.] I only swab decks for a couple hours, and only three days a week. But enough about me. What do you want a crew for? You going after that ruby, too?
[voice]
Of course I'm going after the jewel. [What a stupid question.] I thought that was obvious.
[voice]
[Geez, what a jerk! And anyway, silliness helps Asbel take his mind off getting attacked by one of the people closest to him. Anything to lighten the mood, to encourage the rest of the crew, to make them feel like things can go on being the way they were before. He really doesn't want to think about what happened or what else could happen. So Asch can just lay off.]
Yeah? Then what're you gonna wish for if you find it?
[voice]
None of your business.
[... doesn't mean they're friends, though.]
[voice]
[Like he hasn't heard that one five gazillion times before. He's still a little annoyed, but the flare of anger is dying away.]
Maybe that's part of the reason.

[He rubs at his temple, invisibly.]
... I have somewhere I need to go back to. That's all.
[voice]
[Because what else could he possibly mean?]

M-- maybe, maybe not. Anything is better than this sad excuse for a world.

[Said like he thinks this guy's just embarrassed about being homesick or whatever.]
We all have people and places we want to go back to eventually, you know? It just means we'll have to work together to figure out a way to get everyone home again, that's all!
