[The handwriting on the journal page is a little messy and sharp, but still readable. It's also done entirely in orange marker.]
Let me see if I got this shit straight here. We're brought here by some asshole and we're stuck until we can find theShikon Jewel [There's a scribble line through the words, but it's still readable.] Piedra Roja gem, which has been broken into shards across the Seven Seas.
Am I the only one who finds this all annoyingly cliche? This is the part where someone would bitch and moan about having better things to be doing back home, but complaining isn't going to be getting anyone anywhere.
So here's the deal. I'm getting my own ship and setting sail on this bitch, anyone around port up to joining me? Yes, that would make me the Captain and that's non-negotiable. I don't care how much or how little experience you have so long as you want to find this gem as much as I do. What we don't know we can easily learn, so the only problem will be if you're a fucking douchebag who doesn't know how to take sensible orders. I know there's going to be some trust issues here, but the more people go off on their own the less likely it'll be to gather as many shards as possible. It's not like we have much of a fucking say in the matter, so anyone up for it?
And for those of you who've been here longer, any information on any progress that's been made would be appreciated.

Name's Dirk Strider, though there's a high percentage chance I may be using the name Cap'n Di-Stri around here.
1/2
[Oh, no way is she ever calling him D-Stri.]
Well met, Mister...
no subject
This may be a shot in the dark, but do you know of anyone named Dave Strider? He has a penchant for round sun glasses and an odd array of music at his disposal by means of an eye pod or what have you.
no subject
How old is he?
[He regrets writing it the moment he does, feeling like an idiot at losing his cool. But it would be even more telling if he scratched it out, so he rolls with it as he regains some of his composure.]
Dave Strider is my brother. There's three variations of him to my knowledge, however I haven't gotten the chance to meet any of them before.
no subject
He looks about...sixteen? Seventeen? The ages for humans are sometimes hard to tell, but he is a young adult, at least. If you ever wish to see him, he is aboard my ship.
no subject
It's another few minutes longer before he answers, having spaced out staring at his journal as his mind ran wild with potential outcomes.]
In that case, I'll be delivering the radar personally when it's ready.
What's your name and the name of your ship?
no subject
Then I look forward to meeting you in person, Dirk.
My name is Grell, and our ship is the Golden Rapier.
no subject
No offense, but your name and hand writing aren't exactly telling so I gotta ask. Chick or dude?
no subject
Are you insinuating that I'm a hatchling of some fowl? I'm not sure what a dude is, though.
no subject
To put it simply, sinewave is a wave frequency that's commonly used in mathematics, physics and engineering, as well as occurring in nature in ocean, sound and light waves.
Chick is another term for female and dude is a term for male.
no subject
So it can be found among echoes?
A rather odd terminology. I'm very much a lady, however.
no subject
It's more like a whistle, or the sound a tuning fork makes. An echo is more of a reflection of sound with the time delay being calculated by taking the extra distance and dividing it by the speed of sound.
I'll keep in mind to try and lay off the slang to avoid too much confusion in the future.
no subject
I see. It sounds rather fascinating! [Now she wants to read all about sinewaves, even if it'll just make her head spin.]
If only your brother could do the same. A lot of what he says sometimes doesn't make sense.
no subject
Here, check this out.
[The comment about Dave goes ignored for the moment, he really doesn't want to think too much on that because he knows he'll just make himself distracted and start over thinking shit. Instead he draws a simple diagram with labels.]
Those are some other basic sound waves known as non-sinusoidal waveforms, which are basically waves that aren't pure sine waves. A pure sine consists of a single frequency, while non-sinusoidal waveforms contain multiple sine waves of different frequencies.
[Dave speaks one language that's hard to understand, Dirk speaks another language that's barely more comprehensible.]
no subject
It's easy to see that they are very different, but how do they come to be so?
no subject
["Simple" he says. Sure.]
Where A, the amplitude, is the peak deviation of the function from zero, f is the number of cycles that occur each second of time, ω = 2πf is the rate of change of the function argument in units of radians per second and φ, the phase, specifies where in its cycle the oscillation is at t = 0.
I'll withhold the other calculations and try to explain the others as simply as possible so I don't overdo this shit too soon, but that's just to give you a basic example.
With Square waves, the amplitude alternates at a steady frequency between fixed minimum and maximum values, with the same duration at minimum and maximum. The transition between minimum to maximum is instantaneous mostly. These waves aren't in the physical sense, but more for electronics and signal shit.
Like a square wave, a triangle wave contains only odd harmonics, due to its odd symmetry. The difference is that the higher harmonics roll off much faster than in a square wave, which gives it those peaks. And a sawtooth wave is similar, with the difference being that a sawtooth wave ramps upward and then sharply drops. It's basically an extremely asymetrical triangle wave and is mostly used in music.

The rest of his explanation is alright for the most part. She really thinks Dirk is quite intelligent, and she can respect a person like that. It also shows her that there is a lot to learn in the world. Any world.]
The explanation is far easier to understand than the formula, luckily. I may have bitten off more than I could chew with inquiring more about this, but it doesn't deter me, much, from learning about this. Piece by piece, of course.
no subject
But if you're still interested, I can write up some basic notes for you to go check out and hand them over when we meet up so you can learn about them at your own pace on your own time.
no subject
Yes, something like that would need much more time to absorb, preferably on my own. I'm sure you'll be around to answer any inquiries I may have, correct?
[Now she wonders if other types of waves can be made, like spirals or irregular, choppy waves resembling mountain chains, or anything else.]
no subject
no subject
Luckily, there is context.]
That would be appreciated. Thank you. Should you need further help from us, do...hit me up.
[She's sure she used that right...maybe.]
no subject
You used the phrase right, good job. But maybe you should tell me just what year your from so I've got a time period to keep in mind so I know which phrases you'll get and which'll go right over your head.
no subject
Late 1800s. London, to be specific about the region.
no subject
So back to the matter of business, which direction did your ship head in when you first left port? Thinking I'll start off the opposite way, it'd do us no good to explore the same areas.
[Private]
We headed north, north east, east, and we're now in the north west, docked at Malihini Island.
