[ Conan hadn't yet bothered with writing in the journal, deciding that he'd instead wait and merely flip through the pages. When he'd discovered that they could broadcast what was written in them into other journals he was, naturally, intrigued. There had to be a logical explanation for it, after all. ]

[ Finally, he puts his fountain pen to the page and writes. ]

I came across something interesting and I'm wondering how deep it goes. So, I'm going to list a few things, let me know if they are familiar to you:

I'm not sure I should be giving other people's names to strangers.

[This earns a soft little laugh from Maribelle, finding this young man to be rather clever for his age. Either that or he had a very young voice for his age, either one.]

A very prudent call, and if that is the case then let us not remain strangers! My name is Maribelle, or Lady Maribelle as my associates may call me. I am leading the current efforts in forming a crew to protect the innocents from piracy, and exploring the further islands for the benefit of humanity. I assure you young man, I certainly don't mean you or any of your friends any harm.

If you'll allow me to solve any murders we might happen across, I'd be happy to join.

Murders? Well... I certainly hope there won't be any murders within my crew, and I'm fairly certain when we fight for our lives against enemy pirates that you wouldn't be able to call it murder.

However, I certainly cannot allow any injustice to go unpunished. So I shall give you free reign as a junior investigator aboard my ship to see to any and all criminal activity that may transpire, murderous or otherwise. If you can prove yourself to me, you shall certainly earn my full support on land or on sea to help us detain these criminals.

[ Murders tend to follow him back home, hopefully they do the same here. ]

[Well that's rather... morbid. Wouldn't you want to hope that murders don't occur? :|a I mean even if it would put you out of business as a murder investigator.]

Your confidence is certainly inspiring, but we shall see if you can live up to it or not.

I was living with a famous detective, he's taught me a lot. [ Actually, he learned everything from Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is infinitely better. ]

[Staaaaaares :| ... I think you really did mean "do the same", didn't you?]

Really? We don't have many famous criminal investigators where I'm from. I was considered to be quite excellent at it home in Ylisse, but in the end I wanted to see justice done properly in the courts. So my studies went towards learning the laws and becoming a court magistrate, so that justice could truly prevail. All too often I've seen the rich and the powerful get away with the most heinous of crimes simply because of their wealth and influence, and it cannot be called justice if we allow exceptions.

[ Nooo. He actually really hates to see people die. But.... if they didn't he'd kind of be out of a job. ]

That's why we have forensic evidence. So that the guilty can't talk their way out of the hole they dig. [ ...uuuuh. ] O-or at least, that's what Shinichi-niichan says.

Interesting... I don't actually know what forensic science is, but it sounds much like what I have to do myself in place of such critical evidence. Yet one of the things that is truly unjust that I have been working to change is that no matter what kind of evidence is presented, enough influence or importance can brush it aside. Have you ever heard of the term... too big to fail?

Really? This Shininchi must be a rather clever person for you to quote him like this.

Several times, but I don't think it's true. Forensic science is the careful examination of the scene of the crime-finger printing and blood splatter analysis. No two people have the same finger print and no two people carry the same genetic code.

A-Aa... Shinichi-niichan is also a famous detective, but he's usually off on cases so I don't see him very often.

Then I truly envy your world darling, for we do not have the resources to truly investigate things quite that well. Yet even with this evidence you are speaking of, it still has to come down to the courts to see that the hard work investigators do isn't for naught.

Well, perhaps we might meet him should he ever find his way here. If not I'm sure you'll likely mention him again if he's as famous a detective as you say he is.

That's why it's important to draw a confession from the guilty in front of witnesses. [ Always in front of witnesses. Otherwise the murderer might try to strangle him... again. ]

Mm! It'd be really great of Shinichi-niichan turned up! [ 'Somehow I doubt that will happen' ]

... Well that's a rather useful skill. Most of the nobles I've had to deal with wouldn't confess to brushing their teeth in the morning, unless they were blackmailed into doing so.

[Well you've certainly got balls... soccer balls that is.]

Eh? But it's good to brush your teeth. No one wants cavities.

I know dear... I was trying to make a point. They're just the sort that won't admit to anything unless they see some sort of advantage for them to do so. You would have to be quite skillful in the art of conversation to trip them up into getting them to confess, and that is quite a useful skill to possess.
