Refreshing to see democracy in action. I am referring of course to the matter of the Bläckfisk elections. My son is always stomping about proclaiming the virtues of the people’s choice in government. I wonder what he will say now that those of Bläckfisk have done just that.

[With a bit of guidance, naturally.]

Fledging government and all, it is still a tumultuous time for those of Bläckfisk. I would recommend steering clear of the place until things settle. It is the island’s first proper election after all. There are bound to be a few rough patches as they find their way. Best your crews do not get mixed up in them. It would be a shame to hear you had lost a ship by sailing into port during an inopportune moment.

At any point in your travels have you discovered a reputable jeweler? I am certain there are some around I just hadn’t cause to make note of them before. Though I suppose, in a pinch, some bit of plundered treasure might suffice if any of you have happened upon a ring and would be willing to part with it?

Will of the people is great and all, but it's still not great. I mean, the average person back where I'm from was a friggin' moron. I sure as hell wouldn't trust their taste in leadership.

We'll see how long that lasts in a place as unstable as this.

[Had his post been vocal the praise for democracy would have been dripping sarcasm. This dim view of people was also why he had personally overseen the election to make sure the best man came to power.]

Most seem to foolishly cling to the opposite view even when shown time and again what comes of it. But you do not?

I tend to be the type to not really care who's in power. I'll still do my own thing, regardless. That's the thing about Outlaws, we don't really like authority much. Democracy, dictatorship, whatever "ocracy" you want to slap onto your favorite way of running things.

In the end, it's all the same. No matter how much you might have lofty goals, eventually you're going to turn into an asshole, or assholes in your ranks are going to dilute your message. Doesn't matter who point of view you have, it's just being human.

Where a community must agree on what will do it best, I must say that generally the majority knows not of what it should do, and it takes a few with vision to steer them. Too many voices will simply dilute what is needed, and ultimately mean nothing.

Had I only known the way to seek out those with like-minded ideas was to praise an institution doomed to failure I should have done so long ago. Given the chance most people will chose foolishly, based on their own selfish wishes never-minding what that would entail for the rest.

That is true of any and all, but when it comes to such a group deciding it is plain to say that the majority will be uneducated and unfit to judge what is the right path. That is the true folly.

But I know little of such matters other than the matters of what I am accustomed to, which is the rule of my lord and the duties of my noble family.

Apparently not. The former mayor simply set himself into office and no one thought to oppose him. I suppose at the time he might have been a decent enough fellow or else the people just had not yet witnessed his darker nature.

There's a certain jeweler on the Isle of Eternal Bliss that I would recommend. Part of the price is likely to be a meeting with the lucky recipient, but the man does excellent customization in a very short amount of time.
