[Unheard, the crinkle of a newspaper being folded and placed down beside the journal proceeded what was written across the page.]

Refreshing to see democracy in action. I am referring of course to the matter of the Bläckfisk elections. My son is always stomping about proclaiming the virtues of the people’s choice in government. I wonder what he will say now that those of Bläckfisk have done just that.

[With a bit of guidance, naturally.]

Fledging government and all, it is still a tumultuous time for those of Bläckfisk. I would recommend steering clear of the place until things settle. It is the island’s first proper election after all. There are bound to be a few rough patches as they find their way. Best your crews do not get mixed up in them. It would be a shame to hear you had lost a ship by sailing into port during an inopportune moment.

At any point in your travels have you discovered a reputable jeweler? I am certain there are some around I just hadn’t cause to make note of them before. Though I suppose, in a pinch, some bit of plundered treasure might suffice if any of you have happened upon a ring and would be willing to part with it?

The business Elissa and I were distracted by has been concluded. Where might we catch up to you? Depending on how we travel, we may be passing by Isla Empieza on our return. Should you require anything we might be able to pick it up for you.

Apparently not. The former mayor simply set himself into office and no one thought to oppose him. I suppose at the time he might have been a decent enough fellow or else the people just had not yet witnessed his darker nature.

[He can't say this isn't a total surprise. He had seen something somewhat similar in another world, except the reason for that guys power was a feather.]

We might never know why, I suppose. But it isn't like this is the first time I've heard something like this. It probably happens it many more worlds than I could count. But at least there is an upside in this case.

It is human nature for men to follow whomever is willing to lead them. That well may be all there is to it.

[Silently agreeing with the upside. Anything that furthers his cause is a good thing! ]

Are you a student of politics?

Although not all men follow who takes over by force.

Not really. I just end up in situations were politics turn out to be something I have to deal with sometimes.

No, but most do. It is far easier to submit than it is to buck the system.

[He smiles at the second answer.]

Politics can be inescapable.

It is, but I can't say it's something I've ever personally had to do.

[They have a king who did a good job until....things happened. But he dealt with that temporarily.]

I wish one could escape, but it seems to not be the case sometimes.

It is certainly not the case here, where we have been thrust into the conflict between the Navy, the Pirates, Jones and his ilk.

[And sadly something like that is a Tuesday for him.]

That is true. A conflict one doesn't ask for, but never the less have to be a part of. I kind of wish I could avoid it, but what can you do.

Make the most of it. Maybe something worthwhile could be created from it all.

I would hope so, but nothing can get better without help.

Only if I have to. I'm not the type to want to go helping everyone who needs it out.

I would not say I was an hero on a white horse ready to charge into battle to safe the princess, but I do what I can.

Never the less there are probably people who would think of themselves as such. I should really get back to cooking on the ship I'm sure, I'm sure they will be getting hungry soon. It was an interesting talk.
