"The girl went on her knees, and bent over me, simply gloating. There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive, and as she arched her neck, she actually licked her lips like an animal."
[The words come over the journal very softly, almost purred.
It's late at night, and Alex is perched in the fighting-top with her journal.
There's no hope for sleep, and there's a hunger in the pit of her stomach. It's been growing since she got back in her body, and sheep's blood hasn't soothed it. She's bled them more often than she usually does, careful not to do permanent harm, but it hasn't helped.]
I feel like I could recite the whole book if I tried.
Isn't it funny? The things you remember?
Especially late at night. Little things you don't even remember learning that just creeped into your brain.

Uwah, that's...from a book? I don't think I've ever read a book that would have such a line...
...I guess you can't sleep either?
[Although he did notice that Alex tended to have strange sleeping habits...]
[Voice]
[The relative length of both twilights combined. Sometimes she could manage a little more, sleep into the night or during the day if she was especially tired.
Lately, she could take a cat nap or two during daylight hours, but at night she felt almost on edge. Restless.]
That's why I take the night watches.

[A bit, to keep the human side rested. But it was the same as eating. She did it more out of habit than any real hunger of that kind.]

But the brain and body are quite interesting things, don't you think?

But I never plan on finding out, that would just be silly.

[She knows it's late at night but she finds that sometimes having something sweet helps her rest.]

I don't do a lot a reading, but... sounds interesting. You, uh. You read a lot?
[Voice]
[Which might make her chuckle a little. Because, well, of course that's the book she's quoting. Not that anyone not on her crew (besides a few certain people) would understand.
Still. This is a new voice, and that's always interesting.]
I used to read a lot more. I haven't kept up with it a lot since I've been here.
[Voice]
I really don't read. Watch a lot of movies though... guess that's kinda obvious. Don't have the patience to read.

[That's because when you read it you were at the age where sex was "icky". Not that he'd ever cop to that.]
voice - horrible and wonderful things?
[Yeah, she sounds a little too pleased about that.]
voice- sure let's call them that
[He's a bit over the whole 'vampire' scene, being from Louisiana and living both in and so near New Orleans for his whole life, well...it's both highly amusing and stale.]
