"The girl went on her knees, and bent over me, simply gloating. There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive, and as she arched her neck, she actually licked her lips like an animal."

[The words come over the journal very softly, almost purred.

It's late at night, and Alex is perched in the fighting-top with her journal.

There's no hope for sleep, and there's a hunger in the pit of her stomach. It's been growing since she got back in her body, and sheep's blood hasn't soothed it. She's bled them more often than she usually does, careful not to do permanent harm, but it hasn't helped.]

I feel like I could recite the whole book if I tried.

Isn't it funny? The things you remember?

Especially late at night. Little things you don't even remember learning that just creeped into your brain.

Yeah... I have horror stories about people with reactions to meds.

I... [It's personal. But so is talk of drug use.] I was in a mental health facility. From the time I was eight until I turned sixteen.

So. Got to see the best and worst that comes out of places like that. And treatments.

I, uh. I knew someone who went through a lot of rehab. Not quite the same thing, but close, from what I hear. Didn't sound like a pretty thing.

At least it seems like you're doin' better now, right?

Yeah. I'm doing pretty good now.

Got my head sorted, took care of stuff, then moved 2000 miles for a fresh start. Had it pretty good after that.

Except the assholes. That wasn't fun.

Hey, which way did you move? You sound like we're from similar worlds, maybe the same one even- you from the United States?

And assholes are always around, trust me. No escaping them.

Yeah, I'm from the States. Moved from Missouri to Rhode Island.

That's... two thousand miles? Seriously? No fucking way.

I'm from Albuquerque. Those places are like, right next to each other for me. I just see them on paper placemat maps at Denny's.

About four-thousand miles coast-to-coast in the US.

Isn't Rhode Island like, the size of a dot? Couldn't you drive from side to side in like, an afternoon? That sounds boring as hell! This has got to be a crazy vacation for you!

It's so small! And I lived in a small town. In a small state.

But my mom kind of figured I needed quiet, and it was good for me.

But this place? Is awesome.

It is, isn't it? Man- things were getting to be shit where I came from, I had people after me, I had basically no one, and now- this place is the shit. There's no one up my ass, the only person I had to look out for is here anyway, and everyone at home is safer with me gone.

[A little contemplative] Kinda makes me wonder if I should even bother and try and go home, y'know?

People go home all the time. Just poof and vanish, quick as they came. Apparently Davy Jones just... sends them back.

So me? I'm just chilling until he does. Not in any rush, you know?

Well, if I go, it's gonna be on my terms. Not any old octopus ghost. I decide whether I go or stay.

Right now... just haven't decided, I guess.

I guess I just don't really care. I'm here for the ride, for as long as it lasts.
