voice/action for the Merrily

[there is silence a moment, just the sound of the sea to let you know the journal is open and then:]

I've decided I don't care about dating or that kind of stuff anymore.

[sent mostly to Ace and Smoker but he doesn't know how to private it or even if that's a thing really. Anyway it seemed a lot of people hadn't wanted him to think about that kind of thing in the first place so he should let them know]

I wanna be Pirate King and have all the friends I want and all the meat I want.

[and the rest of it... it didn't matter. Nothing could be better than nakama anyway. That done, he closes the journal and goes to find Smoker. He wants to spend more time with him before the race is over]

For what reason? I thought you were gonna beat me in that field, Luffy. [Ace was in the middle of riling up his spar-hawk for a little bit of fighting and trying to drink a hot cup of tea at the same time. He was becoming a doddering old man, just like Gramps--definitely no longer of dating or marrying age.

There was the occasional screech and the sound of talons ripping at metal.]

Ace has been on a date already? [is interested by the metal sounds] I've been on two. [a pause] I'm not sure if Smokey counts.

[speaking of Smokey and Kodachi though]

It's just not fun if I can't have everything I want.

Ahhh? Well, I haven't been on any. Not real ones, anyway. [Ace considers getting laid at the end 'a date'. Stuffing his face in front of someone doesn't seem to constitute that kind of experience, though it was pretty fun for him, anyway.]

Anyway, I think you might be thinkin' about it like it's a fight, Luffy. Dates, relationships--those kinds of things--you don't gotta think so aggressively like that--er, rather, you shouldn't.

Hehh really? Why not? [it's weird that Ace hasn't been on a thousand dates by now or more. He was really cool. Maybe people were just dumb. He huffs a little at the advice]

I know. [he's been told by everyone what they should be and what they shouldn't be and it's all the same and different and confusing and nothing he wants so]

But I only wanna do it the way I wanna do it but I don't wanna hurt anyone so I'm not gonna do it.

It's nothin'. I just don't wanna.

[Brushing it off quickly--] Anyway, nobody's gonna wanna date you if you're just thinkin' about yourself. That's not how that works.

Everybody wants somethin', right? Think about what the other folks want. It'd be more like a kidnapping than a date if you just thought about yourself, idiot.

Why not? You wanted to before. I bet Ace would be good at it.

[no brushing off here.]

Yeah. [nod] Everyone wants something. So I'm not gonna do it unless I find someone that wants to do everything I want.

Oh but I kind of kidnapped Smoker though. Is that a kidnapped date?

I could pretend. It'd be real easy for me to pretend and be someone that somebody would wanna date, but I'm bored with that. I'd rather make someone happy as their captain, instead.

[He nodded to himself, pleased with his answer.] But, anyway, I'd definitely call that a regular kidnapping. You could have a tea party with him and dress him up in a fancy hat, but it's still gonna be a kidnapping. [Sage nod.]

Aside from that, I think you came up with a good answer. You said somethin' smart, Luffy.

[he laughs at the thought of Smoker at a tea party]

Shishishi I bet Keimi could make him a fancy hat to wear. That'd be pretty awesome, huh? I don't think he'd do it, though. [Smoker would probably jump overboard first.]

[He grins even wider at the compliment, but then it softens a little cuz he gets it suddenly. It's a little different from his situation, but Ace is the same as him. He wants to do that kind of things on his own terms and not anyone elses. But he wants to be a good captain, too, cuz that's most important. Luffy is proud of him and wants even more to be so strong that Ace can only be proud back.]

Don't worry about dating, Ace. Someone will find you.

[or maybe a lot of someones. But he knew there was at least one person who would pursue Ace without giving up because he was just the kind of guy they wanted to hang out with and do things with. Ace just wasn't very good at looking, he guessed, so whoever was chasing him down would have to fight really hard to keep up]

Don't be ridiculous, Luffy. Plenty of folks already found me.

[At the very least, Ace feels a little bit better. He came in, a bit worried about his little brother, though fortunately his concern was eschewed by the realization that he had come to a good conclusion about his situation. It was something he could be proud of as a brother.]

Ah, but anyway--what's this stuff about you kidnapping Smoker? [Ace finally got the hawk back in tow, giving it a bit of beef jerky to keep it calmer.]

[that's not what he meant but that's okay since nakama are better than anything]

I wanted to hang out with him. He's a good guy, you know. But he's a Marine so I had to kidnap him first.

Hmmm. Good point. Still, that's a poor way to make friends with a Marine, isn't it?

[Ace didn't say it as if it were a definite. He was wondering the truth of the matter...]

We're already friends. Smokey wouldn't have come if we weren't. [since he wasn't strong enough to beat him yet]

Well, I remember seein' him try to arrest you in Arabasta. Didn't think he was quite chummy then.

[Then again, he was pretty sure nobody would have been on Smoker's good side at that time.]

But he let me go when it was important. [nods] And blushed. I guess he's always been kind of weird.

...You're talking about Smoker? That Marine jerk?

Yeah. [nod] He reminds me of Jii-chan sometimes. ... only not as scary.

Yeah, he's way too nice to be gramps. Gramps would chase us to the end of the world if he wanted.

[The scariest possibility was always present in Ace's mind.]

I don't want to think of him like Jii-chan at all. [cuz now that he thought about it that just made things really gross]

... [Ace didn't get it, but...]

Alright. Uh. Why?

Cuz it's weird. [obviously] Anyway it's okay cuz I know what to do now. [or what not to do anyway]
