Also, Captain, we need to replace one of the water barrels. It's starting to show signs of rotting, and I'm not going to put anything the crew's gonna drink in it.

Anything special you want on this island? It's got a lot of handy machines, so you should check out the workshops.

I'll poke around, but a good working stove and a sturdy refrigerator are really all I need.

What tea do you have?

Mostly black tea. A little bit of green tea. If you've got something special you want, let me know.

Jasmine or ginsing. I don't mind green, if you can't find either of them.

I'll see what I can do. Both of them can be used in things other than just drinking.

[Not that variety is an issue when you've got a chef like Zeff at the stove.]

[drapes himself fetchingly in the doorway] You marvelous old cook, you. Treating the captain like he is one. I think I could fall in love.

[and then slightly more serious]

No requests from me but I might need someone to step into the Moon's galley... I hate to ask you to train again.

[since it was his fault the last one left]

[Zeff snorts at that.] He's the captain of this crew even if I do want to kick him overboard on a semi-regular basis. He gets a little respect for that if nothing else.

[He then scowls.]

How the hell did you manage that? [Because if getting repetitively kicked in the head didn't force someone to quit, what could?]

[Good man. Thatch almost feels as if he should respect Ace a little more. Almost. At the question, he puts his hands in his pockets and looks out onto the deck. It's a big question and not one he really wants to answer. Guilt still stings at him since who does he have to blame but himself]

Politics. [one shoulder shrug. That's the most he's going to say]

[Zeff crosses his arms and glares at the other man.]

You know I'm not one to let a crew go hungry, but you owe me an explanation at the very least if all the time and effort I took in training your old cook just got thrown out the window and I'll have to start over with someone fresh. I have to train them not just in how to read a recipe but in how to think like a cook to keep the crew healthy and make sure their supplies last without making anyone go hungry. That involves teaching them quite a bit about herbs, spices, and anatomy.

[If this were his restaurant, he'd have them working in the kitchen though not specifically on cooking food until they understood the importance of keeping things clean and such. Also allow them time to start getting the idea of the basics before moving on to the more advanced stuff. He doesn't have that luxury here since the two ships might get separated, and that'd leave the Moon in a lurch.]

No need to apologize, but are you sure? Might be a while before we hit up another port, and it's always good to have a taste of something you like to keep your spirits up on the sea.

Already looked 'em over to make sure. The others are doing just fine. I suspect this one's either just old or got knocked around too many times.

I appreciate the offer, but I don't want to put you in a place where you have to constantly clean the water because of the barrels it's sitting in.
