[Wan decided to test the book with something written. It was better than looking like a fool and talking aloud to himself in a place full of cold-shouldered strangers who were obviously looking for more of a reason to fight him. He didn't know what he'd done to upset the town he woke up in, but it was clearly enough for them to be threatening to his person. And he really didn't want to get into a fight with anyone and risking harming bystanders.
Raava's silence was also a concern, but she had grown less talkative the longer they were joined. They didn't need to talk that often anymore. So he didn't put much thought behind that. Not yet, anyway.]
To the book that speaks back: Hello.
I have recently woken up in this place and I don't know or recognize anything about it. I've traveled all over my world and nothing like this village exists. I would like to learn more about it, but the people aren't very friendly and most refuse to speak to me.
So I ask you, hopefully helpful book, for your aid.
I'm not really concerned about my safety, I can handle myself. But I have a friend... an animal friend. She's a catdeer and she answers to the name 'Mula'. If there are a lot of catdeer in this place, she'll be the one with a bedroll and small travel pack tied over her back. Please don't hurt her, she'll do you no harm. If she runs, that's okay. Just tell me where you saw her and I'll get her.
Thank you.

voice/drawing;
[And he just briefly sketches a cat in the journal, then a moment after it a deer. They're not amazing, but they're clear enough. Helpfully, he adds the word 'cat' with a little arrow pointing at the cat and the word 'deer' next to the deer.
Then he switches back to voice.]
Does that help?
voice
It does. Those are very strange animals.

I heard that there's sea monsters here and I've never seen those in my world, for example!
voice

But monsters are definitely real. I've fought some before.
voice
voice
Those are the monsters I fought, anyway!

[Said almost in a sing-song kind of way, because isn't that fun?]
voice
That's terrible!
voice
Well, except for that one curse a while ago when some people turned into them, but that was just temporary.
voice

We get curses every so often, pew! Just like that. I don't really know how they work. And that's saying something, 'cause curses are my specialty!

[Hope you weren't expecting a better reason.]

['Not cursing people' is not an acceptable option here.]
Re: voice

There's just... several seconds of complete silence.]
Hmmm.
Nah. That's dumb.
Re: voice

And anyway, did you hear the part where it's my specialty? I can't just stop, that'd be crazy! Er, crazier than I usually am!
