[Over the journals a deep raspy voice quiet sings. Yeah that's not going to sound normal to anyone, whether they know Smoker or not.]

[That's because it sounds like a dirge. It is a dirge, in fact. Smoker is kind of surprised he's alive now.]

[And not especially thrilled at the circumstances of it. Not that he expected anyone to hear him singing about it. He's sure as hell not waiting for nakama to save him though. That's something pirates do. And if Aokiji rescues him again.... Well... he won't. And that is why Smoker is singing the marine song Kuzan hates. So there. And now he'll try to make a post, but with the way he can't tell how well the gloves are gripping the journal or barrel, who the fuck knows.]

I'm stuck on a barrel. In the middle of nowhere. Now what?

[Now what indeed?] I have no idea where this is, but I wish this barrel had rum instead.

It's a big barrel, just not big enough.

Our super kind host said he wanted me to learn humility enough to accept help when I needed it because even pirates know this basic law of existence. [Muscle twitches in his cheek.]

Wonder what he will do with me if I ever die and he manages to get a hold of me. I'm not the type to accept help if I don't think I need it, even if the rest of the world is too stupid to agree with me.

[And because he died and didn't go with Davy Jones, probably because of the phoenix thing. He doesn't doubt that there are ways in which his death would end with him under Davy Jones control, but he thinks it would have to be a kind of death that the phoenix would take a long time to heal from probably. Like when Saga made his body explode, or by drowning since that was Davy Jones' realm supposedly.]

You're in a crew aren't you?

So? Weren't you in one too?

Yes, fine, but if you leave your crew it's different.

Jones spent a long time trying to tell me that crews aren't just for the sake of everyone else, it's for my sake too or some shit.

I wasn't going to endanger the kids in my crew with trying to help him or anything so he wanted to find an incentive I guess.

So basically, the crews aren't optional, they are because Jones needs this shit done and he can't or doesn't want to do it himself, and we have no choice in not doing it... And he words it as if it was all our fault or for own benefit.

Can't say I'm surprised.

My guess is he can't.

It's more effort using us as intermediaries so, there's gotta be another reason than laziness or just preference.

My guess is boredom.

Boredom on a being that is technically eternal and all powerful is a dangerous thing. Especially when people are little besides toys for them.

Why do it himself and end everything so quickly when he can use toys and enjoy the show? Time probably doesn't really matter to him.

[He thinks about it.]

[A grunt.] I don't know. I think....

[Snorts.] It doesn't really matter.

I guess it doesn't. It's not as if it's going to change or situation or what he have to do. Is it?

Seeing as to do otherwise would involve drowning again, going through a worse lecture with Davy Jones and then being sent right back to the same position and probably forced to accept help from a worse crew?

[Ikki chuckles at that.]

[Switches to writing as best he can while clinging to the damn barrel.]

[You know, he didn't expect the other to actually do that. And now he has the image of some guy -tall and bulky because that's how he imagines Smoker- clinging to a barrel in the middle of the sea and writing. It's not just the image what sends Ikki into a laughing fit, but that it's Smoker doing it.

At least the laughing doesn't last long, not by normal standards, though for Ikki standards it's basically the equivalent of laughing for hours. Combined with a slight stomach ache and all.]

You are certainly something. But what about your rank and such? Shouldn't those be included for it to properly be official?

[He's still chuckling, though.]

[He scrawls in a quick ^ symbol with the words "VICE ADMIRAL" hovering over his name.]

I suppose. Official and legal documents have never been my thing, I don't even know if my birth certificate really exists.

If I have one I'd burn it.

Your parents really chose that name? What did you do to them to warrant that? I thought it was nickname or just a title.

My parents were messed up, let's just leave it at that.

And suddenly everything makes sense.

At least my mother wasn't crazy enough to give us bad names. The small comforts.

Yeah, don't even ask when I started smoking.

Or drinking.

Or beating up pirates with a baseball bat. It was young, I'll tell you that much.

I started beating others with my fists when I was six, believe it or not, that worked better than with a bat or something.

Though I've yet to try any of those other things, neither I'm interested. What does alcohol have that makes so many people interested in it anyway?

Eh, fist fighting young isn't that surprising.

Alcohol is a poisonous relaxant. It dulls your impulse control, so for people who have trouble relaxing it's a great help.

Kind of like smoking as well. It lightly poisons you, but it's relaxing.

[Congratulations Ikki, you now have nearly flawless insight to Smoker's entire characterization. He WANTS to relax more, but he's basically too wound up and a fucking spazz, so it's so hard on him he has to drink and smoke to do so.]
