I apologise for my lengthy absence. I'm afraid I became rather ill, one of the symptoms being a severe case of fatigue. [What he isn't saying is how -- by combining low blood pressure with voluntary bloodloss, which led to anaemia. No one else needs to know any of that.] I've been trying to keep tabs on what's happened, but I may have missed some things, I admit.

It seems we're in quite a bit of trouble, aren't we?

On that note, if the crew of the Antoinette could please join me on the top deck, there's something very important we need to discuss. Thank you.

I arrived the first week in September. Nearly four months now.

Let me make one thing very clear, and I mean this kindly:

There is no distinction. The Navy, the locals, even Scurvey Dog (whom I'm sure you've met) cares very little about us as individuals. We are a collective whole. They see no difference between you, the fire-starters, the "pirate hunters", or those simply trying to survive this place.

We are all pirates, and we are all held collectively responsible for the actions of the worst. So your best course of action isn't to claim you aren't responsible. No one cares. Think of remedies, not excuses. That is the best use of your time.

I know all that. I still have the right to complain and I think, amongst all us 'outlaws', the distinction between who is making things worse and who isn't is a useful thing to know.

What are those pirate hunters you mentioned?

A crew of our kind -- those pulled here from another world -- who have taken it upon themselves to hunt anyone who engages in what they consider to be piracy.

I don't believe that there has ever been a published list of "unacceptable" behaviour, no. You'd have to inquire with them, if they are still holding to that mantra, at least. Times change people, and they may have altered their mission.

So you're a doctor? Those are pretty rare where I'm from.

No, I'm not a doctor.

I have some training in medicine -- my family owns several hospitals and related facilities. However, I have never formally studied it and hold no degree.

However, I am the only person with even passing solid knowledge in these areas on my crew, so their well-being falls to me.

Isn't it a bit pretentious then to call yourself 'surgeon' if you just have field training?

It is field training and not book training, right?

A bit of both.

However, historically, a ship's surgeon didn't tend to have any special qualifications. If a man was willing to take the responsibility, it was his, and that was his position, regardless of his training.

Fair enough. My time on ships back home didn't lend much into learning the background of those on the crew, being as I was a passenger.

I'm a ruin explorer, so I'm geared for this jewel quest more than the open sea.
