Crew Wanted

[Kyouya writes a little larger than he normally would, wanting to make sure that it's noticed on its page. Not just skimmed by, as he fears some of these things might be.

It still may be, but it's worth a chance.]

I am acting on behalf of Lady Maribelle -- the daughter of the duke of Themis and court magistrate of Ylisstol, trained in naval warfare and military tactics -- and am looking for those who would be interested in joining a crew.

What we seek are principled individuals, those who wish to find treasure but do it without engaging in acts of piracy. We intend to stand against pirates when they cross us, so those who have experience with battle would be most welcome. It is not, however, a requirement.

If you are interested, please either contact me through these journals or come to the Restful Night Tavern. I will have a table there to speak with you personally. I am happy to answer any questions.

Stand against pirates when you cross them, then.

What do ye think they do, then? Fly colors at all hours and no purpose with nary a thought as to how that would...Oh, let me think. Give them away?

That is why I said "when they cross us," sir. If we are undisturbed, we will not disturb. If we are threatened, we will respond.

Aye, we heard that well enough.

That would be assuming, of course, you're carrying anything of interest to a pirate crew. Surprising, really, what does and does not interest them.

[...Oh. Well. Good, then.]

Then I suppose it will depend on what we're carrying, sir. [Calm, respectful. After all, he doesn't know who he's speaking to, so he'll be cautious.] That is something I cannot say for certain, as I imagine it will change frequently as we travel.

[Smart, considering...You know. Pirate. Not that anyone knows that or anything. It's good to have a certain kind of plausible deniability.]

That is, of course, assuming they'll hoist colors before they're on you.

You be a bit new at this seafaring bit, I take it.

I'm afraid I am, like many of us. However, Lady Maribelle knows better than I. And whether they announce themselves or not, they'll find a fight waiting.

[Still perfectly calm. ...Bold words, too, since he has no fighting knowledge himself. But, well. He doesn't have to admit that.]

[And a woman captain, to boot. This is almost painful.]

That may be so, but if you find yourself up against an experienced pirate crew with inexperienced hands and they hoist the red flag...

We will do what we can and what we must.

For the record, mate, and understand, this is just a word of...Friendly advice.

Announcing your intentions to be as anti-pirate as possible is akin to painting a target right on yourselves.

Anti-pirate, sir? We do not intend to engage in piracy ourselves or allow what we carry to be taken from us by such acts, but that does not mean we bear any ill-will against anyone who chooses to commit acts of piracy.

If you're referring to Lady Mirabelle's prior address to others, she was over-zealous. [He'll apologize to her later for saying that.] We have since discussed matters, and she does not intend the aggressive action she proposed yesterday.

Aye, but there be those that were aware of it, plain enough.

And it's my understanding pirates have...What you'd call long memories, when it comes to slights. And it's also me own understanding that that would be considered a slight.

Then the harm is done, and that is that. There is nothing that can undo it, and nothing to be done for grudges.

[No, he doesn't sound amused at all.]

Tell that to the pirates.

Thank you for the warning, sir.

[And it sounds completely sincere, too.]

[Bless them. They're all so adorable. He wants to smoosh all of your cheeks and sink your ships, all at the same time.]

But the tense, irritated thought never bleeds into his voice. He's too used to covering himself, to smiling when he feels like shouting, chuckling when his mind is a litany of insults, and making friends with people he cannot stand.]

Is that so? What an honorable sort of endeavor you've taken up.

I don't know if I'd call it honorable, sir, but it is what suits Lady Maribelle, and I believe in the course of action she's decided upon.

Aren't pirates criminals? To take arms against criminals is something worthy of admiration. There's no need to be modest in your aim to help your lady in these regards.

[Kyouya almost protests the "your lady," but he supposes it's accurate enough. He is her subordinate now, like a vassal to a queen. In time, he'll regain his proper rank of royal adviser. But it has to come slowly. She's no Tamaki.]

Thank you, sir. I only hope I will be able to serve her adequately.

I have some experience with fighting; maybe I could join? [ it sounds the most appealing out of anything else, at any rate.

Do you have directions to the Restful Night Tavern?

I don't know my way around this place well enough to give directions, I'm afraid. However, when you find the tavern, it will have a hanging emblem outside of it of three stars.

I told Maribelle-san already, but I'm interested! My father is a police inspector, so I definitely will not condone any acts of piracy.
