First Rose: Not in Oz [VOICE]

[He's been wandering around enough to see other posts and learn a bit about the journal's function.]

So we're given a journal, some money, and we're expected to leave this island as soon as possible via ship? [His voice sounds pretty skeptical.] Aren't there other options?

[In the background there is the sound of seagulls and the sea washing against the docks.]

I don't think I've been on a ship for longer than a day, if that long... [He can already feel he's going to have an awful time at sea. There is a sigh.]

From what I can see, not everyone has a journal like this. Any particular reason why?

That's true, though I am not sure how it would sway my decision. While I do not wish to remain in this place for long, it wasn't that goal what lead me to contact him. It was mostly his experience and credentials that lead me to think that I would be safe under his command.

However, it would be mostly ideal if he does indeed intent to pursue the search for the shards.

In the end, you could go without asking him. But why do you think it would be best to look for the shards?

Is it not always better to have a goal in mind when you move forward? Even if it may be a useless goal, or a mere illusion. Having a clear objective allows one to have hope, to have something concrete to look forward to and in the way, they may pick up other things of more value. Or discover the illusion that their goal was upon discovering a new one.

Sailing out for the sake of sailing in an unknown world and unknown waters may prove to be even more dangerous than searching for the shards. And aiming for those would lead us to make more conscious exploring of the places we happen to come across of, which may lead to an even better discovery.

[She pauses before she adds with a sigh.]

At least that is what I think.

I think you're right, but I'd rather have a goal that will benefit myself, or someone else I ally myself with. Any goal that ends up harming others, or is just idiotic, isn't worth supporting. We have a right to be picky, since we're forced to be here. It isn't like we have many other rights, here.

[He's not just going to follow anyone.]

Wouldn't aim to find a way to go back be a good goal? It's true that it may be for naught, but it's our only clue so far and I think it's worth a shot.

The means some may take don't always justify the goal. [Not like he's one to talk, but he doesn't want to follow someone with little to no scruples.]

[Oh, that's what he meant. Elizabeth can agree with that, partially at least, despite playing the role of a little pure angel, she stands in an actually grey tinted moral. Still, there are many things she wouldn't do or accept just to get back home.]

I can understand that. I have trust that, being an officer of the British Royal Navy, he will know to not use such tactics and means, no matter the reason. That would be something I would not be able to tolerate.

I hope he's such a person that will know better. It wouldn't be good to start an argument out at sea. [Or even a fight.]

I'm sure he is! Our rulers wouldn't allow men lower than that to become officers of their navy!

[There's some innate arrogance there that she can't help. She truly believes so, having been raised believing so. In fact, she is convinced that even if such men were able to promote, as soon as their doings were suspected the Phantomhive family would be sent after them and would have eliminated them. Such is the labor of the watchdogs, after all. So it's only logical to assume that there's no way he could be a bad man, or that England's rulers don't know how to pick their officers.]

[That's a lot of blind faith, which he side-eyes. He'll chalk it up to either believing such because that's how her world really is, or living a sheltered life.]

Hm...I'll have to take your word on something like that... [Even if he sounds skeptical.]

[It's a mix of blind faith and how things are. She notices the tone and just giggles in response.]

It is something hard to prove otherwise, isn't it? But I trust our rulers, after all an officer that would fall so low so easily would do nothing but be a hindrance for the empire and soil our good name and reputation. I don't think any ruler would be so careless to allow that to happen.

If someone acted in your name and committed acts you didn't approve of and that raised a bad reputation, would you allow them to go on and even give them more power?

If they're good at what they do, they could get away with it. If they weren't, then it would be hard to turn a blind eye.

[Power could get one very far.]
