Voice 2.0

So I wanted to do some like, 'research'- I don't come from a place with all this magic and whatever, so maybe somebody can help me out. I asked around and heard there's some places you can go that have like, healing springs? and things like that? but one of them at least turns you into a chick, and that's not really what I'm looking for, so...

I know at least that there's people here who can cure injuries and things like that, if you get hurt during a fight or whatever, but what if someone has an actual... y'know, disease? Is there anybody here who knows how to fix that? Or has anybody been someplace here that might have some kind of magic to do something about it?

Hit me up. I want to know where to go next.

Me too. My mom was great, I know it. I was lucky to have her. I never minded, you know, helping her. I was okay with it, but she knew better. She knew I wasn't meant to stay in Tison Village.

[He's smiling a little too, because he really does remember her fondly. He remembers both his parents fondly.]

Yeah, if somebody really cares about you... they can tell when there's something more to you. Especially if you're not using your abilities, y'know? Then they can really tell. And they're not shy about tellin' you.

[Sinbad is grinning and Jesse can probably hear it.]

I've got a sense. Sometimes you just know things. I can read the waves of everything around me. There's no wave I can't weather. I'm a true sailor and I'm going to be a king. That's what I'm going to do.

[He's very serious about it.]

I use that skill all the time because it's kinda just there. I want to become king and change the world. If I'm king, people have to listen to me, right?

Well, I would think so... not everybody listens to who's supposed to be in charge, but most people do. And if you can read the waves like that... well, there ain't much you can't do in a boat, right? Most people listen to somebody more if they've got a skill they can show off. I mean, if you're king of a desert, it's not gonna help you so much, but I have a feeling that's not really gonna be the case.

[Sinbad laughs heartily and can practically be heard shrugging.]

I don't know where I'm going to be king yet! It might take a little time since I have to come up with some way to do that, somehow. For now though, I'm fine on an adventure. I have some ideas about establishing myself as a merchant, but I can't do that from here.

The place I come from, my home country, isn't very nice. I want to be able to talk to the Emperor and tell him that he shouldn't treat his people like they're disposable, because they're not.

Well, you treat people like they're not disposable, and right there you'll be an okay king. The worst thing the people in charge can do is think that people can just be replaced whenever they want. That's what makes people want to knock you out of place. Take over. Or just make things better for themselves.

[He sighs heavily.]

That's the problem. No one wants to do anything about it. I mean, when I turned down my summons it was mostly a reminder to everyone else that they'd better submit, or be killed. Drakon and his men roughed me up pretty good for that. Standing against Parthevia is a death sentence. If the soldiers don't take you out, your neighbours will.

Rough neighborhood, huh? I hear that. I've been roughed up by our local "authorities" a couple times myself. Sometimes I deserved it, but not always. Living on the streets is rolling the dice every day- government won't protect you, everyone you pass'll take your wallet just as soon as look you in the eye.

There's people like that too, but because I can read everyone's waves that's not a problem so much. I'm a pretty good fighter!

[He's been keeping those skills close to the vest since he got here though.]

When you live in a country where standing up for yourself and your family and refusing orders to be conscripted into the army means you die, people are devoted patriots. If you aren't, they will try and destroy you. I've been called an ex-patriot for a good deal of my life because of my father. Not that he was one, but people....their memories are short.

'Course, just going into the Parthevian army is a death sentence too. So your choices are die or die. I chose neither. They are without a doubt still looking for me.

[Sinbad may have caused a lot of trouble there.]

If you don't mind my asking... I thought I got it when you were talking about "reading waves", but I guess I didn't. You're not talking about like, water waves, are you? What kind of waves do people have?

I can do both. I can read the waves of anything, I think. Everyone has things they have to do. That's what the rukh are for.

But more practically I can read my opponents moves. By their muscles or intent. Just like when I'm sailing through a storm.

Wow... you sound like a kung-fu master or something! Reading everybody's moves before they make them... that's pretty badass!

So, that's what the rukh are for, huh?

Sort of! I think! It's kind of hard to understand. Kind of like having a destiny. That's a different wave though. I know for example, that I won't die today. It isn't meant to happen.

[What this power is, he does not yet understand.]

And you can tell that kind of stuff about other people, too? Or is it just yourself?

You know, I'm not sure. I never really tried before. So for now, just for me.

Huh. Well, maybe you should try it sometime!

Maybe. I wish I knew more about it, but it's kind of strange. I don't even know who I could ask. It's helpful though, keeps me safe!

I wish I could offer more than herbs to help your friend. I don't know what medicine you could take.

Well, I don't know much about what kind of herbs you could scare up in this place, so it's worth a shot, right? I think there's an island that's got a lot of them. I'll have to check it out. If it helped your mom, there's no reason it wouldn't help my friend too.

I hope so. It helped her for a long time, or at least it seemed to. They were pretty expensive at home though, the last set I traded a whole bag worth of pears!

Wow, whole bag of pears, huh? That's pretty steep. I'll have to budget, I guess.

[That's a lot of money for Sinbad.]

If you work at it, you can probably figure something out. If you need help let me know. We placed in the race and we have money.

Oh- no, I'll figure it out, man. We've got some business going. I'm sure you need that money so you can finance your run for king, right?

Yeah, well I can't be king here, at least it won't help me at home. But it's okay, we'll manage. I can work if I need to!

That's the spirit! Money only stretches so far, after all. Gonna have to scare it up somehow. But it sounds like you've got plenty of skill to do it.

Yeah! First I fished for a long time but when they really started enforcing the fact the fish belonged to the Emperor, then I was working on rescuing people and trying to get hired as a bodyguard. I could do that kind of thing here too!
