So I wanted to do some like, 'research'- I don't come from a place with all this magic and whatever, so maybe somebody can help me out. I asked around and heard there's some places you can go that have like, healing springs? and things like that? but one of them at least turns you into a chick, and that's not really what I'm looking for, so...

I know at least that there's people here who can cure injuries and things like that, if you get hurt during a fight or whatever, but what if someone has an actual... y'know, disease? Is there anybody here who knows how to fix that? Or has anybody been someplace here that might have some kind of magic to do something about it?

Hit me up. I want to know where to go next.

Disease? Such things that cause the weakening of the body are hard to cure. I have only seen it done by cheating death itself.

By... cheating death? What does that mean?

To become immortal. My lord was ravished by sickness and once immortality was achieved all such ailments were no more.

There is a ritual known as the Shikaisen. One who is familiar with the Tao can preform it. You use an item to substitute for your body, when complete you bring forth your death, however the substitute causes you to remain. Technically the substitute becomes your new body, and the old one is "dead" however your soul lives on. Thus all that ailed you in life is gone.

With the... Tao? That's a religious book, right? So it's a religious thing?

The item because your new body... does that mean, like, if your item is a like, a rock, then you become a living rock? Because I don't know how well that's gonna fly.

It is a religion, yes. It's concept however is simple.

Not quite. I used a dish of my families, which serves as the basis. However what you see before you is how I looked before. Technically one can look however they wish though, so one could return to their youthful appearance if so desired.

So... it's magic. 'Nuff said.

Is this a thing that you know how to do? The ritual, I mean? Are there any, like, drawbacks? Besides living forever, I guess.

I know it well, as I set it up for my lord. The drawback is that if it fails, you no longer have a life. But that may not be such an issue here.

Well shit, it kinda is, I'm not trying to kill him instead! Isn't there, like, some kinda smaller ritual or something? Something that wouldn't kill him if you screw it up? I mean, yeah, cancer kills you, but it takes some time to do it!

Nay, the entire point is cheating death, so one must invite it to complete. You could always have it in wait for if he succoms to sickness and let the ritual complete that way. However, in this world... death is not so finite. Not that I would recommend such a method. One does have a second chance however if they wish to pay the toll.

The... toll?

What do you mean? [Jesse is starting to sound exasperated.] A second chance at what? After dying? I'm seriously getting like, every other word here.

In this world if you succom to death you may pay a price to be returned to the living.

Like... money? Or something more complicated? I'm guessing something more complicated, right?

More complicated. I lost abilities I had held, including abilities one can not forget. Imagine if you were unable to do a skill you have honed over years, despite understanding how to do it perfectly.

Oh.

So, that's not really much of an option, then, is it. At least, doesn't sound like it.

And... there's no way for you to learn it back? That's... awful.

I am glad as well. However the time without was torturous, and I knew not it would be regained.

Did you know it was gonna be lost? I mean, like, did you get a warning, or anything like that?

Not quite. It is hard to remember what one does when dead... simply that I awoke and what was missing was missing.
