Aye.

I don't care if they chase us down or not, and I'll still avenge anyone who falls, but redirecting my efforts to making territory safer for the crew does seem like a better use of time.

I agree, a safe territory would help protect those who can't. There isn't anything wrong with avenging those you lose.

Aye, and Ikki and I discussed it over. We have about as much chance of teaching everyone how to fight as how to fly. Our trainings aren't something we could duplicate easily and you'd have to be wantonly masochistic to the point of torture, yoi. Seeing as how the crew seemed to feel I shouldn't put enemies through such things, putting our own recruits through it seemed unwise.

Ikki gave me some good advice and I tried it, when I was practicing with Riku. It was...

Thatch has told me before he wouldn't want to be a phoenix, knowing all that he knows about it.

Before I was trying to come up with a scary illusion to use on people but really, I'm not that scary. Instead I 'suggested' to Riku that he think of his worst nightmare. I let his own mind supply it. It was...he was scared. I could feel his heart race and I felt incredibly guilty. Fortunately he knew that I was trying it but it wasn't....it's difficult.

Some of the other things are just as frightening but in different ways. The influence I could have...I know Thatch is concerned.

[He'd mentioned that.]

Thatch's own mind could supply terrors I don't think anyone else could handle, including me.

Ikki and I can be quite brutal. I wouldn't say it's a product of the humanity being burnt out of us, but it doesn't help.

I don't know that I can be that brutal.

I don't think that bothered him as much as the other thing I did to Riku. I pushed some impulses on him. Not too strong, but also not very suspicious ones either. I gave him an hour or so and I suggested at one time he would get hungry for an apple and another time a glass of water. Then he would contact me again, which he did. Annoyed and everything. He'd had the water and resisted the apple and he didn't know I was doing that to him. I think that's what bothers him more. I've bitten Riku a lot though, he may be more susceptible because of it.
