[Once it seems that the general flow of new entries has slowed, Codi once again takes to her journal with a bright red marker, scribbles in bold letters across almost half a page: ]

WELCOME NEW ARRIVALS

[That should be enough to catch people's attention! Codi forgoes the marker from there and simply speaks, voice cheerful and energetic.]

This is an official broadcast from the Welcome Committee! If you're new and hearing this, then good! You've figured out how to use your journal--that's one of the most important things about being here.

If you haven't already seen or read them, there are posters from the Committee around Empieza--the island you arrived on, and are probably still on right now. They have a lot of useful information on them, so you should take a look! If you still have questions after that, just write or speak into your journal to respond to this entry, and we'll answer them as soon as possible!

Oh, come on, you know what I meant! They were bloating around the hold for days. They probably would've been more unhappy with me if they came back and I hadn't gotten rid of the bodies.

But it's their bodies. They would wake up in them. Unless you mean their spirits are reborn as newborns?

They...would? [Never actually thought of that! A braver woman might have kept the bodies around for a while longer, just to check.] I mean, I'm pretty sure they weren't reborn or anything. They just...showed up on the island I was visiting a few days after they died. None of them remembered how they got there.

If you threw them overboard while they were unconscious, even if they don't remember how they got there, it's safe to assume they floated there because of the currents in the water.

--Look, I know they weren't unconscious. They were literally decomposing, I saw them and it was--

[Okay, okay, mental image of entire crew rotting in the dining room is not welcome anymore.]

--very unpleasant. Other people can confirm this resurrection thing. Do you have any other questions?

[What she was insisting on wasn't possible. But she was clearly not willing to continue to argue it.]

Yeah. You said the navy perceives us as pirates. I though we were pirates, not... just thought of as them. What is it you think pirates are?

[Someone defined pirates to him and it was a very different definition than the actual meaning. Now he is very confused.]

[Sorry, Wan, but you're not going to get a very textbook definition of pirates from Codi, either.]

Pirates sail on boats and kill people and steal things from those they can take advantage of. I can tell you pretty confidently that not all of us are interested in that kind of stuff.

That's not what I was told a pirate was! If that's what they are, then I'm not a pirate!

Good for you! I'm not a pirate, either. But because the Navy doesn't know what else to call us--and because a couple crews take their definition a bit too seriously--they assume all of us are.

That's not right. Has anyone tried talking to the Navy? Is anyone trying now?

We have been, yeah, but they're more of the "shoot first ask questions later" types. At least, the ones you find patrolling on the oceans. They're only following orders, so I guess they don't care if we try to negotiate with them.

[Codi flips through her journal a few pages.]

...Dog says that Crazyface McGee at Gun Frontier might be worth talking to, but with a name like that, I would be kind of skeptical. Also, it's Gun Frontier--not the friendliest place to begin with.

Then that's where I need to go. Thank you. Do you know how I might go about finding a ship to join that will take me there?

Aha--yeah, you definitely shouldn't go alone. I would offer mine, but we're headed for Port Chance, which is... [More shuffling of papers.] ...on the complete opposite side of the ocean as Gun Frontier. Hmm.

I don't know anyone else going in that direction off the top of my head. I'll ask around--or you can put out a request over the journals, see who answers. Just make sure the crew you catch a ride with is willing to help with negotiations.

I can handle myself. If it's dangerous, I'd rather not put anyone else at risk. I'll see if that Miss Maggie knows if any crews are heading that way.

Yeah, that's...noble and all, but we're talking about Crazyface McGee, here. I'm not saying you should bring an army for him to burn through, but at least then, if he shoots one of you because of a nervous twitch or something, there will still be more of you to talk with him.

I can handle an arrow. It won't even get close.

We're a bit past arrows--no offense. How are you at dodging bullets?

Never heard of it.

All the more reason to be careful. [Then, deciding that she is answering for the Committee right now, Codi elaborates: ] They're like these little metal pellets, fired with explosions from things called "guns." There are a lot of guns on Gun Frontier.

[That was difficult for him to imagine. He didn't even know what a gun was.]

What causes the explosions?

Gunpowder! [...She has to think about what makes the gunpowder explode.] It explodes when you set fire to it or hit it really hard. Ship cannons use it, too--they're like really big guns, and cannonballs are like really big bullets!

What's gunpowder made of?

[Wan, she's the Welcome Committee, not an encyclopedia.]

I dunno--really nasty stuff, I guess! If you want to take a look at some yourself, there should be barrels of it in the harbor. Just don't...blow anything up, alright?

I just need to know if there's any earth or rock in it. What do the barrels that hold it look like? Are the marked differently?

[He will totally go look for this stuff.]

["Earth?" What is this guy talking about?]

It's probably got some minerals and stuff in it. They'll be in the barrels marked "TNT."

...Seriously, don't blow anything up. We've already had that happen once.

I'll be careful. And if a fire does start, I'll contain it. I'm not going to let anyone get hurt. I just need to know if I can control this gunpowder or not.

[Control...? Oh god, maybe this was a bad idea.]

--Is there anyone else around that can, you know, supervise? Any new arrivals you've been hanging out with?

No. Don't worry about me. Or this place. I'm not going to put anyone at risk. I promise.

[He was just going to discreetly steal a small barrel of gunpowder to try and learn to control it, assuming he could feel the element inside it. If he couldn't, he'd leave it alone.]

[Oh, what has she done...Codi would be marginally less worried if she was around herself to oversee the proceedings. At least Sasuke is on-hand to contain anything she can't.]

I'll hold you to it. Let me know later, would you?
