[Written] It's been awhile...

I've been here awhile. Do you think people at home miss you?

I mean, I wonder if my friends miss me.

I know I didn't know them very long but I was glad to have them. They were so nice and welcoming. I miss school and having things to study. I miss my friends...even my stupid brother. I guess I'm feeling a little homesick. I mean, it's been awhile since animals have tried to chew on me. Who knew I'd miss that?

This place is really dangerous for someone like me. We had a fight with the Navy and I was completely useless. I was scared then. I've been scared here a lot. What am I supposed to do in a situation like that?

Ah, I'm sorry for disturbing everyone by writing out my thoughts.

I'm told time doesn't pass in our worlds, and I suppose that's the only logical way to explain some of the time differences that take place for people here from the same world at different points in time.

It's still natural for us to miss everyone at home, however.

What did you do the last time you were in battle?

That's good. The amount of school work I'd have to make up, my grades would tank and my father would kill me!

Last time in battle I kind of hid under the kitchen table.

Well, at least there's an easy step up.

How many people are in your crew?

We were three then, but we're five now.

[It's so good this isn't voice because Marco just double facepalms and swears.]

You need to either learn a weapon or learn how to protect the ship. In a sea battle, the navy focuses on creating fires and holes, damage, and then boarding.

You in turn must focus on fixing and preventing all of that, understood?

If nothing else, learn to work a tiller and navigation while you are out of battle now so that your navigator can take part in fighting while you either hold your ship stead or escape.

[Most of the crew disappeared, they're rebuilding!]

I don't know what they did during the battle. We had another crew helping us. I don't think we took too much damage, but we might if it happens again. I'm not that good at building things. My friend used to be though.

[Maybe he can study up on boat repair. That might be useful.]

I think Codi is navigating. I spend all my time in the galley, so I'm a little oblivious to everyone's jobs.

I suggest learning, as your life may well depend on it.

That isn't a bad idea, only there's no one who can do my work for me when I'm not in the galley and even with a small crew, because I'm not very experienced, it takes me awhile to cook for them.

[Ugh that's the problem with tiny crews really.]

Who is your navigator or helmsman?

Codi's in charge, I think she does those things. She's the one who's on the welcome committee.

I'll write back in a half hour or so. I have to make some bread for dinner.

At least that means you should be able to get more people.

Maybe! We had a bigger crew before but the people disappeared a little while ago. It was just me and Codi at one point.

I got a recipe book and I'm trying a potato based bread. The dough is resting right now, so I've got a few minutes. It's got garlic on it and cilantro. It should be interesting.

Sounds delicious.

All right, does Codi fight?

[A surprisingly difficult question, because it's a secret. Good thing Marco can't hear him, because he's a horrible liar.]

Then I suggest one of you learning to navigate through fights, and the other one learning to defend the other.

I'll mention it to her. She's okay with me being just the cook though.

Ah, right. I understand.

I'd still recommend finding a way to guard your ship if nothing else.

Your ship needs to be considered a nakama along with the rest of your crew. Protect your ship and she'll protect you.

That makes sense. It's a lot like how we treat animals at school.

I don't really have any experience in fighting much, but I am pretty strong now physically. I can run and I have a lot of endurance after the last few months at school. Can you recommend something that would be suited to me?

[Guh this takes a lot of thinking.]

[Marco hasn't ever even met someone who hasn't had to grow up fighting five times a day just to survive and get to where he is. To get to a martial arts level would take decades and there just isn't that time. Even swordfighting is impractical. And Marco knows shit-all about guns because he lets Curiel and Izou handle it, but that gives him an idea.]

Cannons?

There's a of strength involved, especially in the blowback, and depending on the size, you have to be strong just to aim it properly. There are even some fancier handheld cannons that are a bitch to aim, but they can do a fuckton of damage in combat.

That might be something I can do. I'll talk to my Captain about it.
