[the flip of a page brings sound first, a grunt and a slight ting of bells]

...there, 'course. Now where's the damn writing thing...?

[it cuts off and the rest comes in jagged handwriting, as the journal translates his Chinese script]

word of advice. don't get captured. sure, you'd say it's better than dying, but I'd beg to differ. it ain't fun. it's not an easy way out. puts your crew at risk, more than if you die. and I don't know about half of you, but I ain't lettin' some Navy ass gloat about stretching my neck on the gallows. Hell no. Never give 'em the satisfaction.

I ain't gonna ask for a recap of the last week, I can figure it out for myself. But I saw mention of a couple names of Oda's guys who I might wanna talk to. didn't know they'd be here...

[for anyone on the Booyakasha, he's sitting out on the forecastle, writing and contemplating the open ocean. He's got a lot to think about. He's grateful for the rescue, though.]

Aw, he took a hit, huh? I lost track of you guys after they started firing cannons, everything went a bit crazy.

[wave of his hand] Fine, fine. Now that I got something to eat. Honest.

Well, we did go in the opposite direction of where the Navy was actually coming from, sooo yeah. As soon as we caught up, there were too many explosions going off at once. [He gestures, holding up an index finger.] A little tip: when you get to a ship, make sure it's the one you've been on.

[He then runs the same fingers past his messy hair.]

Oh, okay. I was just wondering since, y'know, the turtles and pizza and a ridiculous amount of chocolate.

[he shakes his head slowly] Kid, you sure got guts. I'll give ya that.

Heh. Yeah, the pizza is a bit much. I was just thinkin' about doing some fishing, myself.

Well, uhm, thanks!

Fish. Fish sounds good. [Pause.] Mind if I join you?

[he shrugs] Why not? Find me a couple of sticks, I think I got some twine somewhere.

[he hops right up to go hunt around for what he needs. At least, thanks to Gaius, he has the lure covered]

Okay!

[For a one-legged boy, he can get from point A to point B pretty fast. Save for the one little mishap with one little knothole, it doesn't take him long to get the sticks for the task.]

I think Gaius got these a while back.

Excellent! Yeah, that'll work nicely.

[He fishes the wad of tangled twine he salvaged somewhere along the way and reels it out, half for each of them, and pulls his blade out just enough to cut it. They should have plenty of string to dangle off the side of the ship and reach the water. He ties both of them off and then finishes each one with a hook cobbled from bent nails and a little piece of the gold foil from Gaius' candy.]

...it ain't pretty, but if the fish bite it, then who cares? Whaddaya think?

[Hiccup inspects the handiwork, approving of the use of extra materials.]

It looks great. Tricky, but great!

Yeah, it'll have to do for now. Till we can real trawling nets or something. C'mon.

[he leads the way to the nearest railing, and flops down with his legs dangling over the edge of the ship, ready to just toss the end of the line in and let it drag in the desperate hope that they'll have fish soon.]

[He follows after Gan, choosing to lean over the rail instead of sitting on it. His casting is weak, but it still reaches the water, barely making a splash against the waves.]

Using a net would be nice if we had one or two Vikings aboard.

[there's that word again...]

So, what's a Viking anyway? Like, some special name for an army or something? Or is that just what they call people from your country?

I'd say it's more of the latter. We don't really have an army, but we're pretty much bent on being warriors.

Ah, gotcha. The others were tossin' the name around like I'm supposed to know what it means.

That's good, though. Really.

Eh! I keep forgetting not everyone knows what a Vikings is, so it's not a big deal.

Well, now I know. Learn something new every day, eh?

Yeah. It's nice that way.

[He plays with the pole, jigging the line for a bit.]

...Speaking of learning, what kind of world do you come from?

Me? Eh, you know. Same old, same old. I'm an officer in the kingdom of Wu back home, I guess that's kinda special. But just before I came here I was already in a different world, it looked the same but it had demons and mystical powers and stuff.

Two different worlds? That still has to be confusing, though, going from one into another!

Oh yeah. Not sayin' it isn't. But I guess you could say I've got practice at it.

Would it be sort of rude to ask how long you stayed in that other world before coming here?

Uh...a long time. [he doesn't want to say years, but it's closer to that than not.] Long time, yep. You don't really think about how many months have passed when you're knee-deep in battles all the time.

[He gets the feeling it's that bad. Green eyes glance down at the water as he thinks about it, brows knitting slightly.]

Wow. Y-yeah, that would keep you pretty occupied.

Of course, unless you're use to dealing with endless battles, like that. Fighting with dragons sort of felt the same way.

Back home it's not exactly endless. Only mostly.

[he is completely intrigued by that] Dragons, though. That's pretty awesome. I'd never seen a real one before.

Weell, you know. [Lanky shrug.] They're dangerous, and wild. It took me a while to understand where Toothless was coming from, and finding out why the dragons kept burning things and taking our food supply was not fun.

That's crazy. I ain't never heard anything like that. Where I come from, dragons are sacred...but nobody's seen one in hundreds of years. And you'd probably get in a lot of trouble if you killed one.
