[It's late at night when the journal entry appears.]

Evening.

I suppose I am writing in this thing because I can't sleep. I haven't really figured out what to do about that. Any suggestions would be helpful.

[There's a pause, before he adds more.]

Is anyone else up at this hour? What are you doing with your time?

[Another pause, longer than the last.]

If anyone would like to talk right now, that would be fine.

Yes, I think it is better then where I was before I came. I was in a bad situation and there's no future there.

So if it's not being stuck here that's keeping you up late then...did something happen here? *Then realizing that might be kind of rude, he also writes* You don't have to answer that if you don't want to.

Many things have happened here since I arrived, however most recent events are the least important, yet the most sentimental.

It's very frustrating, that's all.

So something just happened that might not be very important but still is making you stay up at night. Basically? *So it must be something very personal, Adol thinks.*

Logically I understand how stupid it is, but all the same that doesn't really help me much. I was involved with someone and they ended it. It is...so trivial.

*Ahhh. Well. He kind of understands how that can drive someone to distraction.* So you just keep thinking about that person and it's hard to sleep.

Yes, and thinking about him makes me upset and when I'm upset I think about everything else. It's a cycle that is unpleasant and one I can't seem to break.

*Him? Oh, Adol must be talking to a young woman who parted ways with her beloved. Of course, if he heard a voice, he'd think otherwise.*

That happened to me. *He's startled to find that writing it down doesn't hurt nearly as much as it used to. Perhaps the ache was starting to lessen.* I knew this girl and we didn't spend a lot of time together but when we did, we were happy. But she had to leave so then it ended. Whatever we had.

[Oh Adol, so innocent.]

It's an unfortunate circumstance. It's unpleasant all around.

*That's the truth!*

I don't really know what to say for that. Everyone is different when things don't work out. I could tell you that it would get better but I don't really know what happened to you. So telling you that wouldn't help. I could try something else, though, if you don't mind.

It's alright, I know it just takes time. Rest maybe. What did you have in mind?

*He's still working on playing better but maybe sometimes in order to sleep, you just need quiet music*

[Well if he's going to play, it's easier to put the book down. He's quiet while he plays and finally he speaks.]

You seem pretty skilled. Do you like music?

*Eh? A man? But she...he said that he was with a man that...

Oh. Hmm. Well, that's different.*

I didn't start liking it much until I met that girl. She taught me this song but ever since I bought this harmonica on one of the islands, I've been practicing more and more.

[If they were at home, Natsuno would have never said anything about it, however he's been in a much more relaxed place for months. It doesn't occur to him not to say anything.]

I suppose that's true. When you meet some people, you begin to pick things up and the people you know change your life.

*Like hearing about a man bemoaning the loss of another man, for example. Adol will have to do some discrete asking around to see if that's a thing that happens.*

It's sad when they go away from your life but at the same time, you're glad you met them because maybe you became a better person because you met them.

Something to that effect, although the person I was involved with is on the same crew as I am. It's a little uncomfortable.

[It isn't like Natsuno wouldn't answer questions. It wouldn't surprise him.]

Oh. Well I guess that would be a problem.

Is it...different when the person you lost is another guy? *You have no idea how much Adol is living up to his nickname "Adol the Red" by asking this question.*

[He takes a moment to think about it.]

I imagine it's very similar, but I don't know. It was my first relationship, so I never lost a girl.

[He sounds a little uncomfortable.]

I apologize for not thinking of your sensibilities. Since coming here I've met many people who are either used to it or it doesn't bother them.

Oh. I guess that would be hard to compare.

*Adol coughs a little, embarrassed.* It's not...it's just different. It's not really anything I've seen where I'm from. I guess it's more common in other places?

It would be.

[He thinks about that.]

Not in my country, but in my world it's a common thing in various countries. Where I'm from it's not the kind of thing that I ever planned to discuss or act on...nothing like that, because of the way things are where I live.

Oh. Well. I guess that would make it hard to live with someone you liked if everyone was always looking down at you. *It wasn't something he normally considered but Adol thought of it from the other man's perspective. If he'd had the opportunity to live with Feena and everyone constantly looked down on them for it, it wouldn't be much fun.*

I suppose. I wasn't intending on doing that though. I didn't think much of seeing anyone.

[He sighs.]

Well, it was an experience.

Well...I'm sorry your relationship didn't work out.
