[With all the commotion of Konoha-nin showing up and then disgusting mind-controlling candy showing up directly after them, Sasuke has nearly forgotten about the other encounter he had on Empieza the day he met his former teammates -- but there's finally been a lull, and he's perched as high in the rigging as he can go without the journal blowing out of his hands when he remembers.]

Has anyone seen this?

[Believe it or not, he has actually put effort into this drawing, but a dragon is not a battle diagram.]

Even if the dragon were still around, I'm pretty sure he's not going to harm you if you run into it.

There's a lack of guys named Davy Jones around here for me to punch, that's all.

Oh please. I already met him, that's the last thing I'm worried about.

[Ah, that makes sense, then. Not that it makes Sasuke sound anything less than deeply annoyed to have to say:]

You're not likely to find Davy Jones even if you leave the island. No one can confirm exactly what he is.

And here I was just going to follow the neon flashing signs to his hideaway.

[Heavy on the sarcasm right back at ya, bro.]

Just be prepared for a lack of information everywhere you go. [His tone sharpens a bit, the sarcasm not quite sitting well.]

What are your plans to find him? [Even if he's a little mollified by that answer, there's still something grating about newcomer confidence -- or maybe it's a lingering effect of Naruto's.]

Don't have one yet! First things first, I'm still getting a ship and people to help sail it and all that. Can't exactly go after the guy without transportation.

You're planning to captain your own ship? [Now's as good a time as any to try to build a crew, Sasuke supposes.]

Sure am. It's a work in progress though.

I'm a martial artist. Don't exactly have much experience with ships, gotta admit. But I'll make it work.

[Sasuke can only assume it is, especially given the man's admission that he doesn't know much about sailing.

Do you have combat experience, then?

Oh yeah, combat experience is something I have plenty of. If we had to search some giant city for these shards or whatever, I'd be all set.

[Since...this whole scavenger hunt thing is pretty much exactly what they're currently doing at home anyway. Huh.]

It's the whole endless ocean thing that's getting in the way.

[Searching for things isn't so much Sasuke's specialty as is searching for people, or one particular person, but he can understand the sentiment.]

There's nothing like this on your world, either? I've never seen a place like this before. The people don't even seem to know each other from island to island.

Not really. I mean sure, we have oceans, and they're big and all that, but the land masses aren't just islands. They're huge continents. And I don't know about you, but I come from a time where the internet and cell phones are the norm, so this not knowing what's going on on other islands thing is just weird. I feel like I've been blasted 400 years into the past.

[That geography certainly sounds more like that Sasuke knows, though the terms that are tossed in immediately afterward throw him for a moment.

Then he remembers that he's heard the term 'cell phone' before -- Codi has said something about them in her world, hasn't she?]

Aren't cell phones something you play games on? How would they help you know what's happening on other islands?

[.......Oh geez. Man, what is with this place? It's like everyone is from What-The-Heck-Is-Technology Land. Donnie would have a fit.]

Well, yeah, you can, but that's not the whole point of them. Seriously, they don't have telephones where you're from? They're like...handheld devices or machines that you can talk into and someone with a similar device talks back. But they don't have to be anywhere near you, you can be entire countries apart and still talk to each other fine! Or text. As in—

[Remembers that he's basically describing exactly what he's already doing with the journal.]

...Actually, these journal things are pretty much lame versions of cell phones. Minus the games. And internet. And plus having to actually write.

[Codi had certainly made it sound like the main point of the things was the games, even if he did sort of recall she'd mentioned wishing she could call her friends with one. In any case, what this guy is describing sounds pretty much like --

What does the internet part of the cell phones do?

Eh, wireless networks and whatever cell phones use, those are pretty easy to hack into, too.

So these being monitored wouldn't surprise me. The internet is, uh... [How to explain. This science-y technology babble isn't his thing.] A global system of of computer networks—

[Annnd this guy probably doesn't know what a computer is either. Man.]

It'd be like if all these journal things were connected to a whole bunch of other journals and they could all talk to each other and you could look up any information you wanted in one journal and it could find that information in another journal. And I mean any information, there's social networks and games and private stuff and science junk and news and politics and -- maps? Directions how to get places... I dunno, everything. You could even look up how to be a ninja and it would probably give you some dumb set of instructions that Master Splinter would totally disapprove of.

[It takes a moment for him to absorb all of that and parse it into something that makes sense based on the journals here, but it sounds like a vastly inefficient system.]

Why would you use it to look something up if it couldn't give you the right answer?

The ninja arts can't be learned from a journal anyway.

[You can totally learn how to be a ninja on the internet, Sasuke, gosh. 8|]

I dunno, I didn't invent it. If you look in the right places you find stuff that's correct, but anyone can post crap on the internet so I guess you just gotta know where to go. It's not as hard or as lame as it sounds.

...Yeah, duh, of course you can't.

Trust me, having the internet here would be way useful. You could Google this Davy Jones guy -- though that would probably just give you a bunch of pirate movies or something.

Everyone I've spoken to has had a different idea of what Davy Jones is. The only thing that's the same is that he's involved with the ocean and he might have tentacles on his face.

Would your personal experience with learning ninja instructions extend to information about that?
