Why, exactly, should I waste my time running around in search of an imaginary, wish-granting gem?

[The disgruntled voice you're hearing belongs to Mitsunari Ishida. As haranguing townsfolk has ultimately gotten him nowhere, he's finally taken a look at the apparently magic journal he woke up with. The accompanying note from "Scurvey Dog" has cleared up a couple of things, but the answers aren't quite what he wanted to hear.]

I detest pirates, I detest this absurd place, and all I "wish" for is to know one thing: where I will find the man known as Ieyasu Tokugawa.

For the sake of Lord Hideyoshi, inform me of his whereabouts at once!

[Clearly someone isn't in the mood for smalltalk. There's no "thank you for your time" after this message or anything. That's that.]

And I am not in the mood for your disrespect, yet here we are.

My ire is well deserved! You sided with Ieyasu! I cannot look past that!

You are fanatically loyal to a man that wished to take our freedom, the one thing we value most. Yet we would have been willing to work with you, had you better timing and requested our aid out of actual respect for us, rather than because you were advised to do so.

[Because, really, Mitsunari would have never thought of going to them on his own, especially since they "betrayed" Hideyoshi. Yoshitsugu, on the other hand... But that's something to save for later. This conversation will just keep going around in circles if she doesn't change the subject.]

As far as I'm aware, Ieyasu is not here. At least, if he is, he hasn't chosen to comment in the journal since I arrived. Feel free to confirm it for yourself.

"Respect" be damned, the chance to destroy a rat like Ieyasu should have been incentive enough for anyone!

[He still can't understand why so few others see it that way.]

I intend to do just that.

We never did care much for morality. As long as he gives us everything we ask of him, we do not if he is a "rat" or even a crazed turkey. We have our rules, and we follow them no matter what the cost to ourselves.

[Even if it would effectively cause them to lose all of their potential jobs, though Magoichi doubt that unification will end all of the infighting. Or the wars outside of the country.]

At last, something sensible comes out of your mouth. If he is not here, our contract is effectively over. That means that I have no reason to keep anything about him from you. But it's true, if I was in contact with him, I would be obligated to keep him safe. The only way I can prove that I'm not lying is for you to confirm it yourself, hence why I told you to do so. But do you really think that a Saika would bluff?

I will not claim to know the ways of mercenaries, but you said yourself the Saika care little for morality. Perhaps you would lie and bluff if it would suit your interests. [Mitsunari speaks as though he's disgusted.]

If I learn that you are deceiving me, do not expect leniency... But no matter what I find, know that I will not be quick to forget whose side you took.

[She smirks.] I could easily keep a man like you from killing him without it.

I expect as much. But know that if you ever manage to fulfill our prerequisites, the Saika Faction will readily work with you... even if we both know that's a big if.

[He makes an irritated sound.

A very big "if" indeed.]

Do you believe I would ever stoop to seeking your aid at this point?

[Unless Yoshitsugu shows up to change his mind again, or something.]

Your personality doesn't win you many friends. Tell me, Mitsunari, how familiar are you with the logistics of sailing a ship?

[She might not be that familiar with it, herself, but there are occasionally benefits to being friends with Motochika.]

[The answer is, unsurprisingly, "not very".

Stubbornly:] I will learn how to sail. This is hardly an insurmountable obstacle!

And, supposing Ieyasu really is here, what are the chances that he already has a ship and crew? How far do you think he'll be able to go while you fumble about?

He can travel as far as he likes. I will hunt him down all the same, no matter how long it takes me!

[Sooner would be better. He is not a patient man, after all...but he is at least a relentless one.]

The craven cannot evade me forever, for the ocean is not infinite in size!

That is, of course, assuming that this world is similar in nature to our own.

My point is this, Mitsunari. Now that Yoshitsugu is no longer here to do it for you, consider thinking things out for once. You would be a much more formidable opponent if charging ahead wasn't your only tactic, and going through the bother of preparing beforehand saves both time and energy overall.

[It's a good point, no doubt, but he's not happy to hear it. Strategy and planning have never been his strong suits. Making up for those weaknesses will be difficult, and if he can't manage it, he'll always be one step behind Ieyasu.]

...Why tell me this? Save your advice for those you consider allies.

Though we are enemies out of circumstance, I do not hate you, nor do I find your cause unsympathetic, and you have some traits that we find admirable. If you are to be destroyed, we would rather it be by our hands, rather than your own.

[If nothing else, Magoichi's certainly proud enough to think she can defeat him even with her advice.]

I amend my statement: save both your advice and your sympathy for your allies. I desire none of it.

[If a lack of enmity could have translated into loyalty towards the Toyotomi it would be different, but that's just not how things turned out.]

And you will not see me die by anyone's hands until he is cold in the ground first.

Very well. Consider it amended.

[If Hideyoshi wanted their loyalty, he shouldn't have broken their rules. Even if Mitsunari never listens, the blame remains squarely with his lord.]

Then I shall be waiting for you, when the time comes. We both know that if such a thing were to happen, I would not be around to see it.
