It isn't a matter of relying on it. But we shouldn't allow ourselves to forget basic manners and simple gratitude simply because we've come on hard times.

We're receiving help that isn't required to be given to us. The least we can do is remember that.

I find a great many people are more inclined to be helpful when one is polite rather than rude.

Really?

If you had information, some vital and some trivial, and you felt compelled to offer something at all times -- would you respond to rudeness and ingratitude by supplying important information? Or would you give the useless parts out of spite?

I know a great many more people who'd do the latter than the former.
