Birthday List v2.0! [Voice/Text]

Hey, everybody, it's me, Hajime! I didn't do a birthday post last month because everybody was so busy with their visit to Isla Empieza. We were on Phantasia, so sorry we missed you all! We'll all need to get together again some other time.

Anyway, now that it's a new year, it's time for a new BIRTHDAY LIST! Lots of people on the old list went home, so it's super short now. Let's all work together to make it big again!

[She then copies down the names of people from old list that she knows haven't left (in actual chronological order this time!)]

[ Homura studiously ignores the list to address the other girl in her usual calm voice. ]

Hajime Ichinose. It's Homura. Have you been well?

Homura!!! I haven't heard from you in a long time! I've been super ultra busy, though, and so much has happened! All the boys went home, so me and Clem found a new crew and I've been having SO MUCH FUN getting to know everybody! Do you wanna hear all about them? I could tell you all about them! You need to tell me what you've been up to, too!

Ah-

[ It really has been a long time- SHE WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THIS. Homura barely manages to keep up. ]

Sure? I mean, I've been okay- I'm sorry to hear that- and Madoka went home, too, but... other than that, nothing much has happened here.

I noticed that Madoka wasn't here anymore. I'm really sorry. I know you really wanted to find her and everything. If you ever need a new crew to sail with, you can come with us! Our captain is really cool. He's always like "Excellent!" and he plays the shamisen! Our first mate is very nice and takes good care of us, but he's kind of gloomy like you so I think you'd get along really well with him! You might not get along with Rin, though, since he's really cranky and is all "OLYMPICS!" all the time whether we like it or not. Ai likes it though! Rin is Ai's senpai from back home, so Ai thinks he's the coolest person ever.

[The rambling pauses for a moment.]

And then there's just me and Clem! Have I told you about Clem? She's only nine, but she's really brave and smart! She's like my little sister now.

I... yes.

[ Homura falls silent as Hajime rambles on. The other girl's invitation to join their crew is really quite touching, for some reason. It's just the sort of kind gesture that Madoka would have- ]

[ ... Hajime won't be able to see her using her sleeve to wipe her eyes, but she may hear a small sniff. ]

No, you haven't told me about Clem. But at least it sounds like you've found a good crew. Thank you for your offer, but I... I have my own crew to think about. Perhaps some other day.

Sure! I'm sure we'll meet up someday, too! My crew is on Isla Empieza right now and I'm gonna go to Alalapowhatsitcalled wherever Ace and Luffy's crews are for a birthday party. After that, who knows!

[ ... now THERE'S a name if she's ever heard one. ]

I hope so. I still haven't thanked you properly for... well.

Everything.

Hm?

[She's not sure what she needs to be thanked for, but if that's what Homura wants to do, okay!]

Let's look forward to meeting up soon, then!

Okay. Let's-

[ Oh. Wait, hold on a second, an important piece of information just flashed by. ]

Did you say you're on the Isle right now?

Yup! Until we get our new boat! I don't really know how long that's going to take, since Mitsuhide and the captain are taking care of that. Maybe we'll even be here when the new people show up! I've never gotten to do that before!

Neither have I. It should be... interesting.

[ Truth be told, she's not looking forward to ANY new arrival flood, but still. ]

If that's the case, then would you like to meet up? If you have the time, I mean.

Sure! I can always find time to meet with a friend! You just let me know where and when and I'll be there!

[ She hesitates for a moment. And then- ]

Are you free now? If you're on the Isle, maybe I could come down and meet up with you.

Sure!! That would be great! I'm at the shipyard watching them work on our new boat.

Alright. I'll be there shortly.

[ Soon enough, Homura's walking along the docks, clad in her magical girl outfit as she looks for her friend. ]

[Hajime has been sitting on the edge of the dock, kicking her feet and humming to herself while she waits. When she sees Homura, she scrambles to her feet and runs up to her.]

Homuraaa~~!! There you are!!

[And of course the next thing she does is launch herself at the other girl and attach like a barnacle.]

[ Homura barely has time to blink before Hajime's on her. She braces herself in the nick of time, though, so the hug only knocks her back a step (instead of slamming her flat on her back). ]

Hajime Ichinose.

[ Eventually, Homura tentatively pats the other girl on the back. It's a complicated feeling, having someone so happy to see her, and so she's more awkward than coolly professional. ]

It's... it's good to see you again.

It's good to see you, too! I wanna hear eeeeeverything you've been up to and I've got so many stories I can tell you!

[Hajime just plows right over the awkwardness, as usual. Of all the people she met face to face that first month, Homura is one of the few that hasn't gone home yet and she can barely contain her excitement at seeing her again.]

[ Thank goodness for that. If it were up to Homura, they'd be staring at each other in awkward silence for at least a minute. Still... she's well aware that many people have returned home, ever since that first day. So much has changed since then- she finally had something to smile about, until Madoka was taken away from her. ]

[ But here and now, in the face of Hajime's excitement, there's another shy smile edging its way into Homura's expression. It's a little sadder, a little more melancholy, but a smile is still a smile. ]

Alright. But... I'm afraid I don't have very many stories to tell. Only something to tell you, at the very end. So why don't you go first?

Alright! Here goes!

[Hajime launches into story after story, gesticulating wildly and even acting out short dramatizations, providing all the voices to go with them. First there's the story about finding a baby kraken in the south seas, then the time most of their crew turned into monsters, then the time a feast magically appeared just in time for her birthday. She's a bit more subdued when she points out that, over the course of that month, Haruka, Rei, and Makoto all disappeared and she and Clem were left to find a new crew to take them on.

When speaking of her new crew, though, Hajime immediately perks up. She rambles on at length about her captain, a skilled musician who appreciates her artistic abilities, the first made, whose sad face reminds her of Homura's quite a bit, Ai, a boy her age who seems almost as excitable as she is, and Rin, who she always puts on her angriest face for when she does impressions.

Then there's what she calls the "Santa Boat," where they met up with another crew captained by an "actual pirate with an eyepatch and parrot and everything!" and what sounds like a rather motley crew, though clearly her favorite is the one she calls "Ragrumpy," who sounds like he didn't like her at all.]

...aaand then I went to someone's first birthday party! They'd never had one before! Can you imagine that?

[ Homura listens patiently. It's... it's VERY hard not to keep cracking smiles at everything Hajime does, ranging from the voices to the absolutely irreverent tone of her storytelling. It's a lot to take in, and she can't bring herself to get a word in edgewise; Homura isn't a particularly outgoing person to begin with, and in the face of all this HAPPY, it's a lost cause. ]

[ Once it's over, though, she can't help but look a little like a deer caught in headlights. Alright. One thing at a time. ]

No. I can't even begin to imagine- does that person not have birthday parties where he or she comes from?

[ ... come to think of it, between what Hajime just said and what she wrote on The List: ]

... your birthday was in November?

Yup! The 24th. Now I'm 17! Roxas (that's whose birthday party I went to) isn't even two yet! Apparently he just POOFED! into existence one day and they didn't have time to throw him a party. He told Pinkie and she decided he needed one ASAP and I totally agree with her.

Happy birthday, then. I'm sorry I missed it. I'll have to find a present for you sometime.

[ And she's speaking straight from the heart, here. Still... 'poofing' into existence? ]

Is Roxas... human?

Yes and no! The explanation was complicated, but he seems human enough to me.

[All the talk of hearts and losing them was worth thinking over, but that could wait until she had more time for it.]

But let's not worry about that. I want to get you a birthday present too, but I don't know when your birthday is, Homura.

Sometimes, it feels like that's as close as we can ever get.

[ Technically, Homura and the other magical girls from her world don't quite count as human anymore, buuuut. ]

... February 22nd. You don't need to get me anything.
