002 - Voice (Action for crewmates)

[ It's hard to write when your fingers are freezing. After a few unsuccessful tries, Homura opts to go for a voice entry instead, keeping her teeth from chattering through sheer force of will alone. ]

This explains why the Backwater Brig's advertisement last week contained a disclaimer about anti-curse apparel. Perhaps the shopkeeper knew this unnatural cold, or something like it, was coming.

Has anyone found a way to warm up yet? The usual methods aren't working. Any information would be appreciated.

[ That's the extent of Homura's entry. Her crewmates won't find her in her usual spot in the crow's nest; instead, she's holed up in her room, cocooned in her blankets with only her face showing... for all the good that it does her. ]

[ She hasn't had much reason to use the journal these past few weeks, especially after the center of her universe left this world. ]

Really? If that's the case, it's an unnecessarily elaborate way of getting us to do so.

I can't think of any other reason that would work, and it does fit a pattern I've noticed. Some of the curses seem to be "seasonal." When people were becoming monsters, for instance--that would have corresponded with Halloween.

Seasonal...? That would make sense.

[ Once is a coincidence. Twice is much more suspicious. A third time... ]

We'll know for certain when the next curse hits. If that truly is the pattern, perhaps we can find some way to prepare.

New Year's Day, perhaps, unless it's too soon. If not that, then probably Valentine's Day.

[Karen thinks about her own words for a moment.]

New Year's could be represented by so many things I'm not certain it's even worth considering. Valentine's is more straightforward, but there's still room for interpretation.

That's true; the logic behind any New Year's Day curse will be more difficult to pin down. As for Valentine's Day... there may be room for interpretation, but there are only so many common themes that can be associated with it.

[ There's a brief pause as she frowns in thought. ]

... I'm not looking forward to Valentine's Day in this world.

I'm on a ship full of boys. I suspect mortal embarrassment is the best I can hope for.

Then again, perhaps we'll be very fortunate and simply have an urge to write everything on heart-shaped stationery.

I am so sorry. Have you thought about finding another place to stay around that time?

[ Clearly, someone's a pessimist where curses are concerned. ]

I don't know if that would be a good idea. Our crew is small, and it takes several people to operate a ship...

[Even if it does kind of sound like a prudent suggestion now.]

Perhaps. Though that would be less of a problem if you docked the ship at the Isle first.

[ Homura knows SHE'S really tempted to skip town the next time a curse comes up. ]

I'll be sure to make the suggestion. I'm sure the captain will approve.

After the intensity of these last few curses, I don't doubt it.

[ Homura hesitates. It's been a while since she's spoken with the other magical girl like this. ]

... have you been getting along alright?

Well enough. We've had some people disappear here, but I suppose I didn't really have time to get attached to them. [Liar.] It's been a while since anyone chased us out with pitchforks, and other than the attack on the island nobody has been shooting at me, so I suppose that's good.

What about you? Everything all right on your end?

It's the same story here. Someone I knew disappeared, but I'm sure she'll be safer there. Besides, she was needed back home.

[ Yes, it's not like her friend's disappearance was the entire reason why Homura dropped off the radar for a few weeks or anything like that. ]

You were there for the Navy blockade at the Isle?

I felt my skills were well-suited to it. That, and I didn't want to risk one of my friends being caught there alone.

That's an admirable sentiment.

Still... we'll have to be more careful in the future. Without the Isle, it will be much harder to survive in the long run.

Hopefully certain people have learned their lesson about setting towns on fire. Honestly...

I'm still unclear on the reasons behind that whole... incident. How much do you know about it?

[ The way she phrases that last word makes it VERY clear that she really means something closer to "absolutely idiotic thing that happened for no good reason as far as she knows." ]

I'm not entirely clear on it, either. Apparently somebody felt the need to set one of the islands on fire. And then somebody, who may or may not have been the same person, felt the need to set another island on fire. The second island was Isla Empieza.

This person can't be allowed to go free. If he can't see that we all need Isla Empieza in order to survive...

He may have been new. I'm sure you remember the confusion from when we first arrived.

But if he sets even one more island on fire, I will personally hunt him down.
