What does one do in the event that your captain has disappeared?

[ Zeref leaves this unsigned. He wasn't sure how to take this. Madoka had given him her quarters just for the sake of his privacy, and had taken him aboard her ship simply because it was one of the few ships where it was safe to have someone with magic like his aboard. Now that she was gone...

Zeref had left the door to his room open that day. His magic felt under control, for now, so he left it open for a bit of fresh air. His current copy of a Book of Zeref was nearly completion, which would be stored safely in a locked chest, only to be used in cases of emergency. Demons were not something to be messed with, even if they would instinctively follow his orders.

He glances towards his door. Mami and Homura were still here, at least. They needed to decide their course of action as a group, now, and appoint a new captain. And Zeref did not want that to be him. He didn't trust himself enough to have those two girls place their lives in his hands. ]

Is there nothing more official required for that process? Is it voted on? Does the First Mate take over by default?

If they are able and willing they have first right, but if they are not one must search for one who is suitable. Either among the crew or a new individual. I have recently experienced this issue, and know it well. Voting may be helpful, but it should be based on capability more than anything.
