My name's Asbel Lhant, and I was wondering if there was a way to make the rest of this book talk in voices. See, I'm not much of a reader. I'd rather just talk than sit down and figure out a buncha words. But if you don't know of a way, I guess that's fine, too.

As far as I know, a journal entry only "speaks" if it was created from an audio recording. However, if someone only uses writing, there won't be a voice attached to the entry.

[A sigh.] It figures...

Oh well, at least I don't have to make people read things. [He says this like it's a crime of some sort. It practically is, considering reading usually involves sitting down and being quiet.]

I doubt anyone would hold it against you, even if you 'made people read things'; most people don't consider that to be a form of punishment.

Not totally sure I get you, but I think if you want to use voice, it's simple enough. I mean you are using it right now.

Can't be helped with writing though, one had to read and reply accordingly, but maybe you could reply to writing with voice.

This journal is really complicated when you think about it.

I'm not sure I get me either, but this is the first time I've ever met a talking book before... I was hoping I wouldn't have to read so darn much, but I guess that'd be too easy.

Yeah, seems that way! I wonder how it works. [Mmmm...] Maybe they're all connected by eleth or something?

Talking books aren't all that's cracked up to be. Especially if they just give you riddles.

Or magic. Magic can answer most questions.

What's so bad about riddles? They're jokes, right?

I guess if you had magic you could do just about anything. But if they were gonna give us a magic object, I wish it'd been something besides a book. Maybe a magic sword...or a suit of armor!

Not always. Riddles can also be various other things like music for example, or plain old riddles like that earth one 'Why is a raven like a writing desk?'

I get the feeling, why those could be useful, I think this is so we can speak to others who might not be on our ship.

Wow... Riddles sure are complicated sometimes. I can't think of anything a bird and a desk both have, unless there was a pen made out of a raven feather sitting around, anyway.

So, you think our kidnapper wants us to friend it up with everyone even though we're on different ships?

Probably. At least that way we have allies should we need them.

Yeah. And I'll bet we can accomplish a lot more by working together, too. It'd get pretty boring if there was only one boat sailing around.

I believe there are weirder things than that.

Your journal is 'talking' in voices right now. For some reason, if you speak to it, your journal'records' it for someone else to hear from theirs. Unfortunately, I have yet to discover how it works.

Yeah, and it's pretty boring, too.

You hafta stay still, be quiet, and concentrate really hard to do it. And if you're unlucky and it's part of studying, you hafta write out answers to a bunch of questions afterwards.

It's not so bad once you get better at it. You've got a point about school, though.

Maybe if the book was about something cool.

...School? You mean like an academy, right? I've never been to one.
