[Winry sounds agitated.]

All right, so there's a fog coming, and something's in the fog. Is that right? That's what I thought I read from Mr. Dog's last letter to everyone.

What could be in the fog that could hurt us?

And what did he mean, cursed?

All right!

[Her curiosity is on high.]

[He's already up there, leaning against a bulk-head with his arms crossed.]

Yo.

[Winry gives him a once-over.]

You don't look like a monster.

[He immediately slips off his shirt, then loosens his belt a few notches.]

Yeah, see, that's the thing.

[Unlike most horror movies, Akira's change is smooth and quick. Flesh gives way to fur as his body shifts forms. Soon a bi-pedal, eight-foot-tall beast in what used to be some very nice pants is standing before her.]

I don't always look the same.

[Winry gapes for a few seconds, staring at the wolf in front of her.]

You're a chimera?!?!?

Chimera? The hell? No, I'm a werewolf.

So, a werewolf is someone who changes to a wolf?

[Winry isn't frightened, she's more curious, and she tilts her head from one side to the other, to get a better look at Akira.]

Back home, I traveled with a man who could be a porcupine, and another was a frog. Ed knew two who were part lion and part gorilla, and Al says he met some people who were part dog, part ox and part snake. I guess, in your world, they'd be were-animals, too? But in Amestris, you'd be a chimera. How did you get like this? Did someone use alchemy and make you part wolf?

Exactly. I was born like this, it's a genetic trait. Frankly, I've never met any others of my kind, no less any were-anything-else.

Alchemy is a myth where I'm from. That shit all got disproven long ago. Though technically I'm not supposed to exist either, so I guess common thought isn't very good to go on.

Really? Doesn't that get lonely, if you're the only one? And what about your parents? Were they werewolves, too?

Ed used to be an alchemist, back in our world.

No, I think it's fantastic being part of a nearly extinct people.

[That just drips with sarcasm.]

What, like an actual occupation? Did he back it up with results, or just parlor tricks?

[And that is Winry being abashed at her own insensitive curiosity.]

Mm. Ed was a State Alchemist. One of the best, I guess. [She rubs her chin thoughtfully.] He made enough mess of things in Rush Valley. Twice! It took both Al and him a whole afternoon to fix what they did when they were fighting with Ling's bodyguards.

A state gig, huh? Historically, I think those guys were mostly shut-aways and crackpots. It was pretty much just a precursor to actual scientific discovery.

Military. The State Alchemists are military; part of our army.

[She considers what Akira said.]

Well...some of them were kind of weird, out of the ones I met. Major Armstrong always took his shirt off! But Dr. Marcoh was really nice. He used his alchemy to heal people.

Alchemy's really scientific. If you ask Ed, he'll tell you all about it. [For hours. And days. Winry laughs shortly, but not humorously.] His whole life is tied up in it!

Maybe it's just something that works where you're from.

You're probably right. I've talked to a horse, and a guy who thinks that death curses are great. [Winry shudders at that.] Alchemy seems normal. I don't understand it. [She's still not sure if she even likes it.] But I grew up with it.

Well, bein' a werewolf is normal to me because I grew up with it. Familiarity makes even the most unusual things seem mundane.

[Demonstration done with, he reverse his transformation and slips his shirt back on.]

And that's why I wear baggy clothes. So I don't wreck 'em if I change by accident and people don't have to see werewolf junk danglin' in the breeze.

I got used to the chimera. [A wry smile. That had been a very interesting trip, traveling with Scar, and Dr. Marcoh, and Mei, and the chimeras.]

[A curious look crosses her face as she wonders what the difference between a werewolf's sexual organs would be from a human's.]

Oh...[nodding]...that's a good idea.

I may be a beast, but I still have a sense of common courtesy.

[A-ahh!] Thank you!

[A little smile, maybe a bit on the wry side.]

I can hit nearly any target I throw something at? But I'm really just a mechanic. I can bake pies, and cook, and I know how to treat wounds. But I'm pretty normal.

Ed...he's...

[Winry shrugs, but her smile is more firmly in place now.]

He's different. He's smart, and he knows how to fight. He used to be in the military. And if he says he's going to do something, he'll do it.

[She looks up at you, Akira.]

He'll find a way to get us home.

Well, here's hoping. Guess we can't count on much around here.

We have to be able to count on each other.
