Written Private to the Spade Pirates

Greetings,

My name is Thatch and I will be your part-time cook, full-time master swordsman, and all around gentleman rogue. From what I've heard tell, I've had more sailing experience than most of you have fingers, that's all right. We'll teach each other, aye?

I'm going to be going to the ship soon enough and clearing out a space for my berth. Preferably the room with the highest ceilings. Before that, I'll be looking to restock the kitchen. If anyone has any preferences for food, let me know now. Also I've heard tell that one of you takes blood. Talk to me, matey. We need to have a face to face.

[he doesn't react overtly to the stake but he can't help but wonder what the kid is getting at. He doesn't seem to have any kind of attitude. It's something else. Something heavier.

But if Ace decided he was with the crew he was with the crew and Thatch would work around that]

[He snorts.]

I don't want to be alive anyway, and if you kill me I won't bite anyone. Solves everyone's problems.

[what the hell was with this kid... Though in a small way, he reminded him of Ace. A small foolish cowardly way]

That's not for me to decide.

So long as you're on this crew, you won't bite anyone or you'll answer to me. [and Marco who was ten times scarier]

We'll keep a small boar or two on-board for you try. If that doesn't work out we'll figure something else out. Additionally, you're welcome to feast on any enemies we run across.

[he waved a hand absently]

Wanting to die aside, is that amenable to you?

[He sighs, another dead end. He flips the stake around and puts it back inside his coat.]

It's unnecessary to keep the boar. I won't be biting the enemies either. I will keep living whether or not I bite anyone.

[Natsuno knows it's going to hurt. A lot.]

I will bear with it. I won't show weakness like that again.

Spare me. We don't need you weak, too. I don't know what your deal is, kid, but you might as well eat and work with us. I imagine you've had a hard life, that you're not particularly fond of who you are. Or maybe even what you are.

Amazingly, you're not the only one. So suck it up and find something worth living for because other people obviously think you're worth it.

[Weak? Considering what he and Elissa discussed, to maintain the strength he had, he'd have to drink much more frequently than once a month. It wouldn't be feasible.]

It doesn't really work like that. It's kind of complicated. We were trying to sort out some kind of schedule, but if you wanted me to maintain my strength, that would be something else entirely.

[He snorts.]

My life was fine. I am not understanding what this is about. If I had met me, I would have killed me for becoming a monster. I can't claim that all of them should die and exclude myself. That would by hypocritical.

[Maybe not all of his kind were bad then. Maybe he was being too harsh. Thatch couldn't be sure and anyway, he'd said his piece about it and if the kid took it, then so be it. If not... Thatch didn't really care so long as he cooperated just a little.]

[He waves that part awa ]

This is about keeping you fed and strong enough to do your part without accidentally going into blood lust or having to bear it.

[sheesh]

Who is we? What have you got in place.

Nothing. Elissa wanted me to consider it. The strength I have now begins to fade after about a week and continues until the bloodlust begins to overwhelm me. It took about a month. Elissa suggested if someone volunteered on a monthly basis I would be fine. I don't want to bite anyone. It's a horrible experience.

[He exhales.] Remaining strong is just not practical. The so-called perks are dependent on my drinking blood, which I don't want to do. If I never drank blood again, I would never die from it. I'm not a regular vampire.

[he could understand that in a sense. Still...]

What if you could do it without biting anyone?

[because no matter what you say, and no matter how little of a cook he is, letting one of his...crew...go hungry is not something that sits well for him]

Granted, it's second-hand information, but the impression I got was that it can't be done that way. Ozaki-sensei said in his studies that when the vampire's blood has human blood introduced to it, the cells consume the blood, granting them their powers and feeding them. Even Tatsumi told me it had to be human's blood, although he was choking me at the time, so you can probably take that with a grain of salt.

[He shakes his head.] I can push my desire aside with regular food. Biting...won't happen again.

Hmm. [well that made sense but at the same time it wasn't an answer he was satisfied with. There had to be some happy medium somewhere, because, damnit all, the lad said he would 'bear it']

We'll see. [he'd let it go for now and ask Marco's opinion since, damned if he knew]

Other than that, do you have any preferences to how you want to contribute on board?

[Natsuno shakes his head.]

I don't have any skills that are vital to sailing. The Captain showed me how to move the sails.

Many don't, lad. You'll learn from Vyse. In the meantime, I suppose, you can help Selphie with her cleaning brigade and keeping stock of the non-food goods. You can help each other out, aye?

[He nods, whatever job sounds fine with him, it doesn't really matter so much.]

That's fine.

Alright.

[he shoves his hands in his pockets and stands]

See you at the ship, then?

Yeah.

[Natsuno gives a little wave of acknowledgement. He isn't very chatty even on the best of days.]
