piratejournal | 001 Written Introduction

I've heard a lot about this journal and how some of these things work, so I guess I will introduce myself. My name is Edward Elric, and like all of you, this isn't the world I'm from.

I have every intention of going home in a relatively short amount of time. I'm not interested in going on a pre-designed treasure hunt to do it though. I don't think we should be just doing whatever these people 'Scurvey Dog' and 'Davy Jones say we should do. I don't know anything about sailing yet, but I'm about to pick up as many books as I can. I'm going to get a ship of my own, because I don't really want to follow this little 'game'.

If this sounds agreeable to you and you want to sail with me, then by all means let me know. I'm sure my first mate Winry Rockbell and myself could use the help. You won't need to worry about food, Winry makes a really great apple pie.

Aside from that, I'm interested in hearing about these strange, other worlds. What can you tell me about where you come from?

Do you have cars? Computers? Internet and cellphones and televisions?

[he's trying to figure out the level of technology this guy was use to.]

It's off the coast of China, so you can say that it's a part of that country, but it's sort of independent of that. It's simple. Every country needs a place to trade for suspicious goods, right? Mallepa is that place in the Pacific Ocean. We're almost a pirate town, run by the Triad on one side and the yakuza on the other side. We're a gangster town and heaven help any army that thinks it can just march on in, because guess who funds the armies.

[Most of that goes over his head.] Uh, we have cars, although I don't have one.

Independent, but not, huh? [There's a pause as he tries to process it.]

Almost like an underground marketplace.

What about airplanes?

[well, that might be a close enough description.]

Kinda like one except we're pretty above ground.

No, no airplanes. We have cars, radios, automail, locomotives...uh, apart from that, you'd have to ask Winry more about stuff like that. She's more interested in technology than I am.

Hmm. That sounds interesting. What are ya-ku-za and Triads? And why couldn't the army just walk in, isn't it strong?

I come from 2045, so I guess I'm use to a bit more stuff, like indoor plumbing and cellphones.

Triads are Chinese mob, yakuza is Japanese mob. Basically a kind of family structured group of criminals drawn together by national pride and stubbornness.

It probably could bomb the shit outta of us, but half of the closest armies use us to clean up their money problems. If they bomb us out, their funds would take a beating. We're just not worth the effort unless we decide to start robbing them, which is just bad business.

[Forgive him, he's stunned for a good moment.]

If it were 2045, I'd be dead! I mean...heh, it's 1917 now. We have indoor plumbing, at least. The Rockbells always did, at least as long as I've been alive. But that's because they do surgery out of their house. Not everyone had it, but I think most of them do now. We live out in the countryside.

I see. So they're using civilians to clean up their messes. That would never happen here. I live in an authoritarian militaristic state. We don't get a lot of outsiders.

I guess that's the nature of this place.

[he sounds a tiny bit bored and a little tired.]

It's cause of the crash. A lot of governments turned to their civilians to boost their economy. Our side of the ocean is just more open about what civilians they would use the most.
