I don't know what kind of sick joke this is, but it ends here.

[Scared? Who's scared? Certainly not Rin. He's pissed off, and that's the most you'll get out of him. Even if it is kind of creepy, watching the words he speaks appear in the journal.]

You've had your laugh. Tell your friends all about your lame prank. I bet you're really proud. But I'm going back, now.

Can't believe I'm talking to a -...

[Dammit, it wasn't supposed to record that as well. There's an audible tch before he snaps the journal shut.]

If we came here, we can go back. I'm not hanging around when I got better things to do.

Unless you're carryin' a space-ship around with you, or you're some super-wizard that can magic up a portal out of here, you're as stuck as the rest of us. What'll you do? Swim away? Where? Are you even from this world?

Swim away? [There's some amusement in the voice, even if it's on the sarcastic side.] Maybe I will.

If I was from this world, would I be annoyed about being stuck here?

Considering that either way, we all just got mass-kidnapped, I'd be pretty pissed.

[Well, that's a fair point. Fair enough that it gets Rin thinking beyond deflections.]

So we're all supposed to look for this ruby? What's the point of bringing in so many people, if only one person can find it?

This thing got spread out all over the place. Would you put a single ship in charge of that? That'll take an eternity.

[ He recognizes that voice and that anger! ]

Rin!

[ He's, of course, happy to hear you. ]

I don't think this is a joke. If it was then it's not a good one.

[That kind of reaction is to be expected; there is a thread of sympathy in Mitsuhide's voice, though mostly it is quiet and calm.]

Unfortunate as it is, you are indeed now bound to this world until either our captor chooses to send us back or you are able to locate a certain fabled jewel... provided it does actually have the power it has been said it does.

What then, everybody finds one piece? I'm not going to wait for the slowest of the bunch.

[It's a stupid set-up no matter what, and don't you dare tell him otherwise. Rin hates this situation, so he'll get pissed off about stupid details if he wants to.]

[ngl, the anger is as distinctive as the teeth.]

Makoto?!

[That takes a moment to process - but then Rin moves on to the important question without delay.]

The others?

[Sorry Makoto, you're pretty much a side dish to Rin ~~even if he secretly respects your swimming~~.]

I didn't say I was laughing.

It's not even sure it works?!

[Another annoyed noise; Rin can't deal with this. Righteous anger is much easier than trying to come to terms with being stuck here.]

I could not tell you about the specter itself, but none of us are sure. Many legends like this could be considered metaphorical, or simply false.

[He sighs deeply. Nothing is certain, right now.]

At this stage, however, it is the only hope anyone has of returning home. At the very least, wandering through these islands may give us more information about our situation.

I don't have time to go exploring on some cruise.

[But, for once, it comes out more serious - almost concerned - than whining.]

So where do we find these shards? How many are there?

[Sorry Mitsuhide, you're the go-to guy for questions, now.]

[Mitsuhide doesn't mind; he takes the temper in stride, because again, it can;t be blamed in this situation. He's a samurai, which in his mind means helping others.]

That is why we have to wander; nobody knows the answer to either of those questions right now.

[He hums thoughtfully.]

There is a creature named Scurvy Dog who allows us to ask one question of him per week through the journals, and right now he is the only source of information we really have about the matter. Unfortunately the usefulness of the resource depends on whomever asks that first question, and he does not respond well to people treating him badly, either.

The one who wrote in my journal?

[That's one little piece of the puzzle, anyway, if a tiny one.]

If he wants to help us, why only give us one question a week? That doesn't make any sense.

Yes, one and the same.

The creature must be restricted in its movements by others. That would make sense of much about it that seems confusing.

[ He knows he is not as important as certain others. He has learned to accept and even adopt this way of thinking. However, he still wants to know how his friend is doing even if his friend is ~~kind of~~ a jerk. ]

[ Even though MAKOTO loves Rei, he doesn't bother mentioning him because he figures Rin doesn't classify him as one of the "others".

Are you all right? I'm so glad you seem unharmed!

Then he's not going to be much help.

[Figures. Well, Rin is used to relying only on himself; clearly he's got this.]

If that's what it takes, I'll find all the damn shards. I need to get back.

[Chances are it's only Makoto's attitude that, to Rin, makes him unimportant as a swimmer. He's too soft; he doesn't push himself enough. (And he's not as naturally gifted as some.)

Haru... It's reassuring, in a way; at least Haru can't win competitions and quietly pass Rin by, if he's here. At the same time, though, being stuck here together pisses Rin off, too. Is he never going to be rid of the guy? Haru is having so much fun with his team, right? He doesn't need Rin around anyway, right?! So he can damn well get lost - him and all the rest of them.

Not that Nagisa's absence is really registering yet. Priorities.]

Of course I'm unharmed.

[What is he, a useless baby? Being unharmed is not quite the same as being okay, though.]

Apart from the fact that I'm stuck in a sorry excuse for a pirate theme park with no way to get back, I'm great.

That determined nature will serve you well. My Lord Motochika would approve.

[Such a goal is probably a little unrealistic, but that doesn't really matter right now. Confidence and energy will serve will in this daunting quest.]

You are going to need to learn something of ship-craft and sailing, if you don't already and you truly wish to find every single shard. Judging from my own recent experience, you are going to have to be capable of defending yourself from men, and from some very unnatural creatures, as well. There are many dangers out on the seas.

[Mitsuhide knows that only too well; dealing with the existence of zombies was tough enough, and he's heard word of far worse.]

Lord Motochika?

[The rest, of course, only raises more questions. (Unnatural creatures?) Defending himself, well... Rin is definitely no expert, but he's physically capable enough that he thinks he can handle himself in a fight.]

I will find every single shard. [He doesn't have a choice; he has a dream to make real. But now that he's calmed down a bit, he can admit that he has a lot to learn, especially when it comes to sailing.]

I can defend myself if I have to, but I don't really know about sailing. If you could teach me -...

[He really hates needing to ask - but he doesn't have a choice, does he? As determined as he is to do this all by himself, he needs someone to help him on the way.]

I would really appreciate it.

Lord Motochika is my dear friend and comrade-in-arms; he approves greatly of such spirit.

[To put it mildly. There is a hint of fond laughter in Mitsuhide's voice when he continues to talk.]

I could teach you a little, but Lord Motochika who could teach you more. Back home in Japan he is ruler of Shikoku and commander of its navies, and has loved the sea since he was a child. There are few who know more than he.

[That evokes memories in Mitsuhide's mind; he can remember taking trips to the Tosa province in Shikoku in order to visit his friend. They had swam and sailed together often, though at first Mitsuhide had been very hesitant about sea-swimming. It had been Motochika's reassurance and confidence, powerful even then, that had drawn his younger friend in.]

We are actually returning to the island of arrival in order to gain a ship of our own, that he might become a Captain and assist those who are inexperienced. With this in mind I am certain it would be no trouble to him to pass on some of his skills.
