So this is how everyone's been communicating then?
Not to sound paranoid or anything but the last magically enchanted diary I wrote in that could write back tried to kill me so I'm just a bit skeptic.
But, I suppose this is as good a place as any to ask, where exactly am I?

Though of course, you'd have to be a witch or wizard for it to work.

Ah, that summoning charm. No, at that range, I don't think you'd have enough power to pull, let alone to distinguish which of the many pieces you wanted. We're talking about the distance between ocean islands, here.
[She was a little fanatic about spell logic back in the day, can you tell?]

And yeah, you're exactly right, which means my searching'll have to be done the old fashion way, though I do have the four point spell, that'll help I'm sure.

And honestly, I'm not sure any spellcraft will help right away - we need to get to the various islands first. Then we can search. Unless you've got something to help fill the sails with wind, we're going to be stuck doing things the old-fashioned way.

I suppose that makes sense-I just never thought about it.

There are all kinds of other things, too - there are people that are advanced alchemists, people that cast spells using advanced math to describe the effects they wants, things based on technology... there are many worlds, and almost as many kinds of magic, or things that are like it.

And do other worlds have to hide their magic as well?
no subject
And that depends on the world. In some, yes, magic must be hidden - the penalty varies, from disbelief, to a misuse office like you've got, to immediate death. But in other worlds, magic can be performed freely; in some of them magic is a science in and of itself, and in others it's readily available to everyone in some way. For reference, my world is one where I can use magic whenever I want, but I don't want people to know it's me doing it - so I have to transform somewhere out of the way, or else everyone will know who's behind the form. That'd... cause problems.

Like a secret identity? That sort of thing?

Hang on. How do you know about the ministry and owls?
no subject
I did say I knew things about how your magic works. That includes Wizarding society and recent events. As for how... would you mind terribly if I kept it a secret for now? If I explain myself, there may be some unpleasant side effects. Not that I've seen the paper in a while...
[She didn't expect she'd enjoy being quite this circumspect talking about a book, but so long as she doesn't forget canon - or worse, tell Harry he's from a book - she's liking this. Maybe she could even be - gasp! - useful to him!]

I guess that's okay.

[The moment she puts it to paper, she wonders if she's said too much... granted, just because there's nothing in the books about "and then I was a pirate" doesn't mean it didn't happen... um. Oops.]
