Ah, well I am just writing to say congratulations! Er-- well I suppose it's due, isn't it? It has been a full year for some of you and we're... well we're certainly closer to finding the shards and completing the Piedra Roja than we were before, so good on you! I don't know how you're going to manage to take the final pieces from the hands that hold them but we'll run screaming across that burning bridge when we...ah...run to it.

At any rate, though I am a humble Meep who hasn't been with you this entire journey-- Well, I have just that you haven't noticed because Mistress quite enjoys the verbal sparring from time to time-- It's still been a great journey and I would like to thank you for all your incredible hard work.

I... Just wish it hadn't come along with causing so much widespread devastation.

...So I am proud of some of you?

At any rate, Mistress has been cackling over some kind of 'Anniversary Gift' that may manifest in week or two so...be warned, I'm afraid. Not that she doesn't have good intent--

Well her intentions aren't neccessarily evil.

That seems to be rather difficult for some of us.

I assure you the difficulty is rather light. It's the temerity that is the problem. If you are under pressure at certain islands you merely have to leave them. There is no cause to be blowing things up as you please.

I know Bullocks Hills has quite its fair share of pirates and fires lately! Why? Well I can't say why, but it's certainly disheartening! Two beautiful chapels burnt to the ground.

Well one beautiful, one that could have used a little more work on their belvedere. It's difficult to find a good one these days, especially in Bullocks Hills, yet I am under the staunch belief that they had something going for them.

Well--of course at the moment what they have going for them are blackened pieces of timber but that is neither here nor there.

It is just sad, is all I will say. A shame, a shame. There is such beauty in this world if you don't persist in burning it down!

You are not a fan of the cockrel? They can be quite irritating at times, I agree. Of course where I grew up it was rare to see a cockrel unless he was already on my plate. So I suppose you would call him dead meat! aha

In any case, no, I do not believe chickens are involved. I could be wrong. It has been known to happen on occasion. Of course I could ask her whether chickens were involved but I am afraid she would either lie or otherwise get ideas that are probably better for everyone for her not to get. Mistress is a smidge on the capricious side, if you haven't caught on.

Though if it is chicken related, at least you would have a steady supply of eggs. That isn't so foul is it?

You see because it is a pun since chicken are fowl and it sounds like foul, though for the most part the meanings are dissimilar.

On the other hand, I've yet to meat a pleasant chicken...

Yet I have met some rather pleasant pheasants! aha

No, that is a lie, I'm afraid. The pheasants I've met I've been unable to gauge their pleasantness as they were likewise dead on the plate, but I am sure they were quite nice in their prime. Though, how does one judge a pheasants pleasantness any way? Is it the plumage? Is it that they don't chase after you and peck at your ankles? It is one of the mysteries of life.

Currently I am on a nice Madovian Era Settee that is actually a reproduction of a style two hundred years earlier than that. It's quite nice and plush and has tassels. I think tassels add a little bit of flair, don't you?

I am afraid that nor excessive or strange medicines are excuses for my terrible puns, so I apologize. I'm a bit lonesome, you see. Mistress has been preparing for quite some time. Though between you and I, I wouldn't mind a nice shower of pastries compared to what she usually has in mind.

In that case, what would you prefer? The Mistress doesn't usually care to cater to requests but perhaps if there was something you were sorely looking forward to, I could slip in a subtle hint or two. Probably for the best, all things considered. There is enough happening without adding more chaos to things. Dear, oh dear if only-- Well-- we can't change the past, can we? Merely press onto the future and hope that things work out for the best.

Knowing your mistress, I'm sure we're in for quite an adventure. She has a talent for such things, doesn't she?

Would you call it talent? I, myself, would call it a propensity of mischief because, quite simply put, she can and does seem to enjoy ah--'screwing wi' ye lot' as she says. It gives her life. Though I can't profess to understand, I am but a humble Meep and if it is outside of the purview of a book, I must admit I am rather flummoxed.

It is difficult to explain. Though I wouldn't mind taking another look at a few of the books you've got in your library. What could I trade you in order to earn such a privilege?

I am quite sorry but my books-- I am not able to trade them for anything, I'm afraid...and unfortunately due to unfortunate reasons that are ...most ah...unfortunate... the estate is closed somewhat indefinitely. Here is hoping we can find all the pieces.

But there is a great library in Manila. Many of my books are more or less direct copies of the ones found there. Have you looked?

We've been to Manila once before. I suppose you could say my interests have shifted a bit since then. But that is useful information, thank you, Meep.

It's a very long and complex story but I wouldn't say ruined... Exactly... It's more... separated, you could say. It all exists--just not precisely in the same place. I do hope it gets fixed soon though I'm quite content so long as I have my books and Mistress.

I wish you luck in your endeavors, however. If you have a specific question, I do have time to answer it if I can. There's not much to do around here of late while Mistress busies herself. Though I suppose I could move myself to dust the busts again. There's nothing worse than dusty busts.

The sort of- I suppose it could be called magic- that you and Scurvey Dog are researching. Does a person have to be born with it? Or could anyone, even perhaps an outsider, pick it up with enough study, practice, and perseverance?

That I cannot say. Some are born with it, others perhaps it's latent somehow? Asleep? Only to be awakened by a certain trigger. There are various theories on it but nothing that has been proven one way or the other. Suffice to say that many have researched, practiced and persevered with nothing to show for it and others have woken up one day and...well... things are happening. I personally believe it has something to do with inter-spacial resonance, but for outworlders, according at least to my theory, such a resonance would be impossible except perhaps over a long period of time-- say, decades. And I hope you are not here quite that long.

It has been implied that the shards themselves act as something of a magnifier for this inter-spacial resonance, as you put it. Could they be used to shorten that timeframe, do you think?

I have to say more shards have turned up than I had expected over the past year.

We don't see eye to eye a lot. Should we be worried about her getting us back for all the bad questions asked?

Indeed! I found myself surprised at first as well, but the times seem to be shifting more toward expecting this sort of thing than not. I've never seen so many phenomena stir up in the world at once--and the fact that Mistress herself was effected! Well that is quite rare. It does happen, you know, from time to time. Though she is usually above that sort of thing due to--well several factors really. Not least of which is bloody mindedness. Though it may have something to do with--

Well never mind, I'm not supposed to speak of it. Suffice to say that you should always be wary of what the Mistress may intend. I do not believe it involves chickens, however, so you may rest assured... Unless she plans to use Kabarra Birds, in which case I would batten down the hatches and perhaps purchase an umbrella or two.
