Because his brother is still here, my other crew mate just lost his best friend and I haven't seen my captain smile in the longest time. I can break down now. Not when everyone else is breaking down around me.
[There's about... sixteen, seventeen attempts to answer that coherently. There's more ink than page at that point. He's 99% sure she means in the platonic sense.]
Not in the slightest. But Roxas likes you, so that balanced out everything. You're just lucky I don't take what other people say to heart. Since it wouldn't be fair to judge someone I know nothing about.
[He tries to figure out to describe it. Roxas was the first person outside of his family he showed his phoenix side, the first person he took flying here, the first person he trusted with everything, the first person he befriended. In some ways Marco still trusted Roxas more than Ace, if only because he and Ace forcibly kept each other at an arm's length sometimes. They had to, just to do their jobs.]
I would destroy the world to save Roxas. That's why Lea left. [ERM. More that Marco is totally in favor of murder and has a "Fuck off" attitude when people tell him not to.] I'd ask them both back, but that isn't something about myself I can change.
Like Roxas, I'm not all human either. Roxas was the first person here to accept my full self. I'd like to think there's nothing I couldn't tell him and vice versa. So we're close, eh?
Still, it sounds like things got better between you two.
[ Ok...so the random stranger that she just met it opening up to her. She could live with that. But now it didn't feel right for her to not talk to him. Cynthia puts her pen down and clears her throat. ]
Roxas is a good kid. A little high maintenance, but I suppose that's what happens when you've been...err...tampered with. Now what is this about you being "not all that human"?
[Marco sounds pretty amused at the idea of Roxas being high maintenance.]
Well, if he ever gets to be a bit much, send him our way, eh? He's a lot easier than Ace ever was, or even still is.
[There's a longer pause as he tries to work out how to say the rest, and he twirls the quill nervously. This is why he gets along so well with Roxas, generally.]
I'm also a bird. A phoenix to be precise. I'm still learning all of what that means, but violently overprotective of those I hold dear is a big part of it. And I suppose the desire to scour parts of the world in flames as well, yoi. [He might be a little too deadpan for talking casually about destroying entire parts of a world...]
[You can see where Roxas' anger issues don't faze him so much. Marco thinks they're cute -- freak.]
Darling, no matter how many times you ask, Lea has the final say on anything related to Roxas...well no, Roxas has the final say. But Lea would probably kill a man before he'd ever let Roxas leave his side.
But I doubt he'd ever be "a bit much". After all, my crew mates are ninety percent his age and five percent act his age.
[ And man did she wish that was a joke. ]
I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the term phoenix. Could you maybe describe it to me? The creatures from my world aren't really the same as everyone else's
[Snorts in amusement.] So it's okay for him to kill to protect the kid, but not anyone else? [Rolls his eyes, though it can't be heard.] Like I said, I'd invite them both back, but it was Lea's choice to leave. And I'm never going to accept anyone saying I should let my family die all over again for the sake of some people who want them dead. Like hell.
[A deep breath and he thinks it over again.] A large fiery bird that resurrects in flames. Chandra has a few herself and she said they're always very aggressive, loyal, but aggressive. They'll claw at dragons if it comes down to it. My brother Phoenix Ikki is partial to spending his time in volcanoes, he took Roxas to see one too.
The colors vary. I'm blue, but I have yellow streaks and purple, and Ikki is red and orange, and Chandra's are usually orange or red too.
[More thinking. He was named after a god of war, the embodiment of a weapon of war. Always war. Even more than the other two phoenixes, but less than Chandra's? Or is it an equal amount? He flips through a book on phoenixes and his own personal notes from his discussions with Ikki and others.]
They're also called Anka, Simorgh, Fuenghang, Ho-o, and Chol. They're usually solitary creatures, and -- [His teeth clench momentarily.] appear at the twilight of new eras. It's hard to say whether because their appearance brings wars, or because they come with the wars, but all of it is certainly connected. Most people don't even know they exist, since it's all wrapped up in so much legend and destruction.
[He shuts the other book of notes firmly.] It's all moot, I suppose. It just means I'm very old, very stubborn, and not even my little brothers have given me cause to change my ways.
Ho-o huh? We have a creature named Ho-oh back in my world. They would describe it as a majestic pokemon with wings that would create beautiful rainbows. Anyone lucky enough to see Ho-oh was promised eternal happiness, and it had the ability to resurrect the dead.
I spent my entire life studying about legends and mythical creatures. So, if you really are this mythical ho-o, this phoenix, you must be one very interesting person, Marco. No wonder Roxas likes you so much.
No rainbows, just sparkles. And I can't resurrect other people.
[A quiet grunt.] Thank you for the compliment, but I like that Roxas likes me for me. People treat birds differently sometimes if they meet them as one first, but Roxas is the same. Kids like that are rare, yoi.
Well...to be honest with you Marco, I don't know you. All I've ever heard about you were stories from different people. You were pretty much like a myth to me. Personally, I'd love to get to know the real you if you'd let me. But other than that, I don't know what else to say.

Were you the one Roxas accidentally scared when he reverted in age then?
