1) Unless there are geographical formations, like mountains, hills, or valleys, then the settlements would only fade into the distance. The fact that they rise and fall behind the horizon is confusing for me, as water generally does not cover these formations unless the relative height of the geographic features allows it.
2) I am referring to any of these automated devices, like the self cooling ice boxes. There are likely others who have never seen these before, which could prove dangerous if the wrong people get curious
As for the rest, I thank you. There is no method of measuring temperature where I'm from. It's a matter of how hot or cold it is, but there is nothing so formal. The predictions are guesses based on yearly patterns and cloud movements. It's easy to tell when there will be fair or stormy weather by the shape of the clouds.
Regarding piracy: that is personal preference. I've been mistaken for a pirate once already. It was not the most pleasant of experiences.
