[Hawke writes that one word and stops. This feels utterly stupid. Still, she's seen it work. A book that can be written in or spoken to, and it replies in kind. Or, rather, not the book itself, she's learned, but others with the same kind of book.

It seems impossible, even if she knows it works. Which is why she writes. It's far less likely to attract attention if she's somehow done it wrong.

This is obvious magic at work, and that concerns her. Has she ended up in Tevinter? She doesn't have friends there. The matter of how she came to be here is another worry. Magic, obviously. But what kind of magic is capable of that?

Feynriel, perhaps? Somehow? Wanting to see her? But he is not here.]

Called upon for a quest, is it? I will say, I've had worse receptions.

[Granted, she can't really complain about being away from Kirkwall. There's nothing for her there, not right now. Just a lot of bluster and obligations forced on her as the "Champion of Kirkwall," a position she never tried to earn. It's an honor, yes, but not one she cares for right now.

Being an adventurer again? Sounds like a vacation.]

I suppose I'm looking for information, then. What is known of this jewel? Fact or legend. I find both tend to be helpful.

I could also use some assistance in doing as a few locals have advised me and finding a crew. I've sailed before but never worked a boat, but I'm willing to learn and am rather handy in a fight.

All I know about the shards is that Davy Jones wants 'em, and he's the one largely responsible for our shared situation. Don't know why he needs these things, or why he has to haul in people from other worlds just to get 'em.

If he's so damned powerful, he should go get the damned things himself.

Where I'm from, you don't have "quests" of any nature. You live, you work a boring job and make a family, and you die. That's the reality for most people. No ghost pirates, no over-zealous naval force, no people with special powers, no nothing.

There's always some reason or another, whether someone chooses to share it or not, that they can't do it themselves. Usually it comes down to lacking the necessary skills.

I can tell you one very important thing; they definitely have power. This much is no longer in question. The nature of that power is not yet certain, but I and others have born witness to it.

Aside from that, all we know is that it is coveted by he who brought us here and he, for reasons we do not know, is using us to try and get it again.

I have seen one who possessed a shard that repelled the undead; the creatures could not pass through the odd bubble surrounding them.

[One of his own crew, in fact, though he doesn't say as such. That has to remain a secret for now.]

There was a strange occurence recently where a woman whom many called a 'witch' had shards in her possession that seemed to give her different powers, though I am not certain exactly what. Some speculate that the shards have different abilities depending on who holds them, or that each shard can do something different.

The first one you mentioned, do they know any spells that would create such a barrier, though not as strong, perhaps? It could be that the shard amplify magic already present.

I personally know of none, though it does not mean they do not exist. The witch did have the ability to control others, including what looked to be mere corpses, so perhaps that is related?
