[It's late at night when the journal entry appears.]

Evening.

I suppose I am writing in this thing because I can't sleep. I haven't really figured out what to do about that. Any suggestions would be helpful.

[There's a pause, before he adds more.]

Is anyone else up at this hour? What are you doing with your time?

[Another pause, longer than the last.]

If anyone would like to talk right now, that would be fine.

[He's reminded that Kairi is Riku's friend, and she would be concerned about him naturally. He sighs a little bit, but writes back.]

Perhaps you should.

She sounds it. Crazy people you know.

[He hopes Chandra likes stories, because now he's started.]

You have to understand this girl was just crazy. The whole town was. Have you ever gone somewhere where people just talk behind your back as if they expect you to be a certain way? It's the worst.

Out of all of them, she was the worst. She had this thing for me, and believe me, I have no idea how she got this idea in her head. She'd come up and talk at me and I'd ignore her but that did nothing to discourage her. I actually looked at her once and you should have seen it. She was completely crazy!

Even as a human, she was stalking me. She thought she was in love with me. Not like, we were dating or anything. She just wanted to tell herself she was in love with me or something. She would sit outside my window every night and watch me. I had to keep my window closed, it was really creepy. What could I do about it?

When she died I was...well not happy, but relieved. At least her friend Kaori had some common sense.

It happens to the best of us! Nothing to be ashamed of.

[Granted, Codi's never really been in that kind of position; she can talk about how much she misses her husband all she wants, but ultimately she'll be too distracted with present excitement to worry too much. Still, she's had enough of these talks to understand where he's coming from.]

Was it messy? The breakup, I mean--never fun when it is.

I don't...I don't know if it was messy exactly.

[He pauses to consider it.]

Because of the candy he had kissed someone else, only it wasn't just the candy, and he came to confess to me. He told me everything, and talked about this other person and I just...[He takes a deep breath.]

What could I say?

Geez, this one really sounds like something else! Some people are like that, and, no offense but you don't really seem the type to attract hordes of young ladies. This kid must have been really, really off her rocker.

And what d'you mean, about her friend?

But I'll do that later, for now I want to talk to you.

[Because while Riku is a friend, she wants to talk to other friends first.]

Would you prefer me to lie and spit all the things everyone who tries to be encouraging and understanding says? Even if not even them believe those things at all?

[Ah--Davy Jones, the heartbreaker. Codi thinks she knows where this is going, but she has to ask: ]

Are you sure the candy wasn't just...clouding his judgement a little bit? You know--making him a bit too caught up in the moment?

Unfortunately, I don't think that is the case. It was complicated from the beginning. It's his best friend. He said he wanted time to clear his head but he broke up with me in the meantime.

[He exhales and the hammock creaks a bit as he shifts to a more comfortable position.]

He seemed surprised that I was upset about it. I didn't realize it was...well. I have horrible luck.

No, I suppose not, I don't care for being lied to. Even if it sounds nice. It's just...exhausting.

Thank you, but I don't want you to think that I...think badly of Riku. It's not like that at all. I wish I had seen it coming, that's all.

You'd be surprised, actually. I clean up pretty well. Since I've been here, I am really starting to look scruffy, actually. I feel like I'm a completely different person these days. Everything I wanted, everything I worked for, wound up being a waste.

Ah, Kaori. She was in third year of middle school. Her and her younger brother were my allies. They were the only people who believed me about the vampires. We saw one, even. I hit it with a shovel.

[He's quiet for a moment.]

I hope they got out alive. I begged them to leave, but they refused. They were brave, brave kids.

[Another nine! Riku's distracted from replying just yet as he instantly slaps his hand down the second the face of the card is revealed on top of the pile.]

[Elissa's life has been full of many things since the magic candies came and went - so much so that she's fallen behind on the happenings in the journal. Normally, she takes pains to keep up with entries and discussions as they occur, since they can be very helpful like Mami Tomoe's timely warning about the properties of the candy hearts. Now, however, she is late to seeing Natsuno's entry - and what she sees disturbs her. Taking up her pen so as not to disrupt the rest of anyone near to her, she begins to write.]

This is Elissa. Are you faring well, my friend? How is your sleep?

Do you have a lot weighing you down?

Geez, Yuuki. Your life...just sounds like it's someone writing a tragedy play, but for real.

[She coughs.]

No...offense or anything, I mean, it has to suck to have lived through all that. Or, not...but still be kicking.

Those are the types of things one doesn't really see coming. After all we don't know what one can be thinking at all times.

[Natsuno is a little startled to say the least, but it makes sense within the rules. He sighs.]

These are mine now, right?

I'm not offended. If I were home, I probably would not still be kicking. Actually, before the summer my life was pretty normal.

[He sighs a little wistfully.]

I didn't get along with my parents. I had a best friend who unfortunately I was in love with. Aside from the stalking, everything else was exceedingly normal. I ran on the track team as an extracurricular activity, I was putting a lot of time into studying because the entrance exams were just a year away and I wanted to get into Todai - or rather, Tokyo University. I had moved out to Sotoba a year before, but that's normal too, kids move all the time.

I definitely didn't know what he was thinking. It's just that we talked about this before, and he gave me his word. I took it.

[He can be heard letting out a bit of an unhappy groan.]

Hi Elissa. Don't mind being late. My sleep is still pretty elusive. I wouldn't say I'm well, but I suppose it's passable. I'm alive yet.

I would say I do have a lot weighing me down.

I can understand that.

[Then again as far as Ikki is concerned, life in general is exhausting. This place has only made it more obvious. Or rather his own stupidity did it, most of those things would have been avoided if he had stuck to his guns from the beginning.]

So, got any useful suggestions for your lack of sleep? Or to do something with your time if sleep keeps refusing to come?

Nope, mine. The goal is to get the whole deck.

[Shoots him a quick grin, then puts down a Queen.]
