Hey book--or I guess people listening to the book?

... It's kinda weird talkin' to a book like this.

ANYWAYS, ahahah, I was just wonderin' when this prank is gonna be over? The whole thing about there not bein' any ramen stands around? I guess I could kinda see how that would be funny for like... five minutes, but it's really turned into somethin' cruel! So somebody just tell me where the damn ramen is, y'know?

PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE? I haven't ate in days...!

[And the option for action for the Charming Murderess or anybody walking along the docks really. There's a blond ninja in tattered clothing crawling on the pier looking pitiful.]

[Despite how pitiful and weak he's been acting, he hops up effortlessly with a surge of energy and follows along behind Itachi.]

Man, what's it take to get a little respect.

[Everybody is so mean.

Anyways, he jogs a few steps and then rushes on ahead of Itachi towards the deck of the boat to look for those rods.]

Less crawling on the ground, for one thing.

[He merely watches him as he runs ahead. Naruto can search around all he likes, but Itachi knows right where they are.]

[Itachi's comment makes Naruto pause for a moment as he remembers begging on his knees in front of the Raikage on Sasuke's behalf. It's kinda ironic.

He's not finding any rods, so he starts following Itachi around.]

So you're super serious all the time even as a kid, huh?

[... That's right. Naruto will know him when he's older.

Itachi lifts the top off a long "seat" near the top cabin and pulls out a couple rods and a bucket. The latter he hands to the blond.]

I suppose I am.

No bait. I'll dig some up at the shoreline.

[Oh, that's where the rods are. He'll just have to remember that for future reference.]

Yeah, I can help. [Dig up some bait, but back to his earlier remark.] What about when you were even younger?

I have always been a serious person.

[There might have been a time when he hadn't been, back before he could remember, before the images of the battlefield had set him on a certain course.]

Why do you ask?

Just curious, I guess.

[It definitely runs in the family or something.]

It's not like there's anything wrong with a smile here or there.

Do you think I never smile?

[He leads Naruto back off the boat and to the docks again. He already has a fishing spot in mind.]

Nah, I know you smile. Seen you do it.

[Naruto grins and starts to whistle happily. Yeah, he can remember a few smiles. Hopefully he'll get to see them again. Sasuke and Itachi should have a chance to be a family again, and if Naruto has anything to do with it, he'll try his best to protect that chance.

They deserve to be happy.]

[Itachi glances over at the blond with a slightly raised brow.]

Have you.

[He stops at the edge of a pier, setting down his fishing rod. His hands form into a few seals, and small drills of water push their way up from the shore before dissipating. The holes they leave behind carry various squirming options for bait, all irritated at being disturbed and hurriedly trying to re-bury themselves into the dirt.]

Yup.

[That's all he offers on the matter as far as specifics, but he watches as Itachi makes a novel approach to getting bait. Naruto was expecting to have to dig since that's usually how he does it, but that's pretty cool! He's never really been good at elemental jutsu himself other than being a master of wind type, but he doesn't know how that could help him dig for worms.

Deciding not to hesitate, he moves to start gathering up some of the juicier specimens.]

[Using ninjutsu for digging is something of an overkill, but it will save them time in the long run. The less time they spend in the dirt, the more can be devoted to fishing.]

This pier goes out far enough that we should be able to catch some decent sized fish. If we wanted to do this out on the open waters we'd have better luck with a net.

That sounds like too much work. The best part of fishing is just laying back and relaxing.

[He doesn't feel like going out on the open waters and tossing out a net even if that'll probably bring up even more fish. Nah, he likes to relax as he fishes.]

But whatever, it's up to you. You probably know the best spot since you've been here longer than me.

I've been here longer, but I haven't done that much fishing at the docks here.

[He situates himself at the end, sitting down and motioning for Naruto to join him.]

Take the side so we aren't casting in the same water.

[Naruto watches Itachi for a second before moving to sit where Itachi was intending. He takes his rod and is quiet for a bit as he sets the bate and then casts out. Actually, it's probably the most quiet he's been at all since arriving, and it's because he's studying Itachi for a bit.

Then he finally speaks.]

Do you and Sasuke fish like this?

... I don't do this too often. Nor have I asked him to join me.

[Is that wrong? Should he be asking Sasuke along? He isn't sure his brother cares for this sort of thing.]

Oh.

[Naruto fidgets a bit and recasts his line before settling down once more.]

Maybe he can fish with us next time.

Do you think he'd enjoy that?

[Itachi is genuinely curious, and it shows when he looks to the blond over his shoulder.]

Yep.

[For various reasons, but Naruto does want the brothers to work through shit. Obviously Sasuke's strong feelings hadn't faded, but at least they were for the good now. Naruto still remembers the first day arriving on the island and having Sasuke swear that they wouldn't be able to hide anywhere if they harmed Itachi in any way.

Naruto just cracked up at him because the idea was absurd. Whether Sasuke, Sakura, or even Itachi knew it, Itachi had become a good friend to Naruto in the future, not to mention someone he respected deeply. The idea of harming him was just ridiculous.]

But you know Sasuke. He might not act like he enjoys it, but if he's not frowning, it's probably a good thing. Heh.

Mm...

[Does he know Sasuke? He thinks he's gotten to know the older version a little better and he knew him well when he was a child, but...]

You seem fond of him. As his teammate, how well do you think you know him?

[Naruto, despite what Sasuke will say, thinks he knows and understands Sasuke better than anyone. After all, their roles could have been switched. They could have been on the same path as the other at any time in their lives.]

Sasuke's my best friend. I may not know the stuff like favorite color or crap like that, but I know him better than anybody.

It's probably blue though. The color thing.

[His best friend, was it? Sasuke didn't seem to think so, from what he'd said. Naruto was remarkably stubborn on the matter, and Itachi could appreciate that. Sasuke needs friends.]

I'm glad that you're here for him.

I'm glad I'm here with him too! Eheheh. Same for you, and Sakura-chan as well. That just gives us a better chance of figuring everything out.
