[It's been awhile since they made their last comments to the journal from inside the kraken, and since then they've busted out, nearly drowned getting to the surface, and then probably nearly drowned all over again in their search for land, but they've finally managed to find an island and Sanji has basically been a collapsed pile of shitty jelly on the beach for a good hour or so now.

It's a combination of hunger and the absence of sound (read: Luffy) that finally has him groaning and forcing himself to sit up, plus he figures they should probably update their nakama on their status again, since it's been a good day or two since they've spoken to any of them.

...And seriously, where the hell did Luffy fuck off to?

Well. Whatever.

Sanji tiredly pulls out his journal, flips it open to whatever blank page it decides to land on, and leaves his message.]

Yo. Still ain't dead. On an island who the hell knows where. I think we—

[A sudden, familiar sounding "Wahoo!" interrupts him from somewhere, and Sanji looks around to see a dust cloud in the distance. He stares at it, watching as it gets bigger and bigger.

"SaaaAAAAAAANNNNNNN—"

...Ah, shit. He knows who that is. But.

Is that...?

"—JJJJJJIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!"

Annnd that's about when a big ol' turtle zooms by with Luffy sitting cheerily on the damn thing's shell, until it crashes smack into Sanji and sends the journal flying from his hands.]

[that's the part he doesn't get. He thinks about his nakama a lot and wants to do things with them or even just be there. It isn't the same as friends. He's not sure about romance and knows kinda about sex since he's seen animals do it. Marriage he sort of knows but he's pretty sure that Ace doesn't want to do that kind of thing because it was something that happened to people who were already parents and usually stayed on land, at least he couldn't remember any pirates who were. But you didn't have to date for families and babies because families you made and babies happened even if people weren't married or didn't really like each other and sometimes you could find them in cabbage but he'd never really understood that either

Ahh, it was too much thinking. His head was starting to hurt. Really in the end...]

I don't care about romance. I just wanna try it and maybe it'll happen.

[as for who...he already knew his nakama really well but he could get to know them better and no one else was as interesting or they'd be nakama already]

[The reply is abrupt and immediate.]

Hell no. Count me out. You know what my interest is in dating you? Or any of the other guys on our crew? Fucking nonexistent.

[The thought creeps him out a little, actually. Mostly because he hears the word 'date' and thinks flowers and chocolates and all that mess, which instantly gives him a Boa Hancock-esque bishounen vision of Luffy and ugh.]

You might be shit outta luck there anyway, the way our crew carries on. The men are dumbasses and the ladies are off-limits. ...To you. Not to me.

[...Eventually he figures he needs to circle back around to the fact that it's not all so black and white, romance doesn't have to be involved, and you don't have to be dating to have sex, not everything falls in line so neatly like that...

But he's not exactly sure how to explain all that to a guy who can't grasp the most basic concepts of liking someone in that way. Hmm.]

[even Sanji because dating is having fun and learning about him and doing all sorts of cool things so he's going to do it and you can't stop him]

[His eyes slowly widen and he just stares, completely uncertain whether to laugh or cry.

This is his life. His captain is giving him shitty flowers and trying to ask him out on a date.

He clearly took a wrong turn somewhere.]

[just sort of slumps and eats the flower for no apparent reason while he goes to sit down on the beach and pout. This dating stuff is really hard and he just wanted to have fun and what's the problem with that anyway?]

[and still hugging his knees he proceeds to roll back and forth along the beach]

[Huffs and follows after, taking a seat in the sand beside him.]

You can have fun without going on dates, nothing's ever stopped you before. And you can go on dates with other people! Just not me.

[gusty sigh and he rolls back, bumping against Sanji's leg and staying there. He really wanted to do the fun special thing with Sanji that Ace wanted to do with all the girls. But Sanji didn't want to do that kind of thing and it felt really weird giving him a flower anyway.

Another long gusty sigh of disappointment.

A fourth.

He can go on...]

[Eyes him for a moment, then gestures at himself.]

Ladies' man, remember? I ain't up for kissing you and shit.

I don't wanna do that kinda of stuff. That would be really weird.

[weirder than giving him the flower. He doesn't get up from where he's lying on the sand, faintly scowling at Sanji's leg.]

I still wanna do fun things just with Sanji sometimes. [because this is nice. Even if they're on a beach cuz they had to pop a kraken because Sanji was sad because of that lady.]

[Nudges him with his leg.]

[makes a sad whale noise and begins to roll and roll around Sanji in a circle. Then flops on his back in front of him, arms and legs spread and looks up at him]

If Sanji ever goes on a date can I see it?

[Abrupt, automatic answer, but then it occurs to him that he really doesn't want to start a whole new argument so he cringes a little and reevaluates his reply.]
