[text] - WELCOME MESSAGE
[Sometime at midnight, at the dawn of January 10th, new arrivals to Empieza (should they open their journals to the most recent page) will be greeted by friendly red letters that take up nearly half a page: ]
HELLO NEW ARRIVALS
[The rest is...honestly a lot less than Codi would have liked to write concerning this place, but there's only so much she can do with the more concerning new posts happening around them. If anyone has any questions, they can always ask.]
[In the meanwhile, she tries to be brief.]
You may be wondering where you are, or what you're doing here! The short of it is that you've been kidnapped by a pirate named Davy Jones, and the only way we know of to get out of here is to search for shards of a red gem known as the Piedra Roja, which are scattered around. Supposedly, if we put them together, we get a wish of some kind--and I don't know about you, but I think we would all like to leave.
Your first order of business should be to check your pockets. If you have any, you should find a good amount of local currency there; use it to buy a room at one of the local inns on Empieza, which is the island where you are, some food and clothes if you need them. At night, it would be a good idea to look for signs to the Blackwater Brig--the shopkeep, Miss Margie, is extremely helpful and has a lot of useful items up for purchase.
If you haven't run into them already, Captain Dave Strider and Leon will be around the island looking for new arrivals such as yourself. They are there to help you and make sure you stay safe. In roughly three days, you will see an entry from someone called Scurvey Dog. DO NOT ask her questions--she will not be helpful, especially if you ask her things that we can answer instead.
From there, I would normally suggest searching for a crew by writing in (or speaking at) this journal, but for the time being, DO NOT REPLY TO ANY SUSPICIOUS JOURNAL POSTS. There's something weird going on with a few people and we're still trying to sort that out. If you have questions, this is a safe place to ask them. Your safest course of action right now is to stay on Empieza until we find out what's going on.
Wind in your sails,
Dakota Perkins and the Welcome Committee
[And as this is technically signed by the group--by Codi's hand, of course--she expects them to jump on any questions that are missed by her watchful eye. It is a group effort, after all!]

You don't have to trust me on this one, but at the very least you should probably be skeptical of the journal entries about killing people like us on the basis of suspicion. That is one thing I will not ask you to do.
Voice
I'd rather camp out in the woods then give them one red cent.
[They've got such a racket going here]
..... She doesn't have a penchant for lucky dimes, does she?
[A witch.. just what he needs]
Blow me bagpipes! I should hope that everyone has enough sense to steer clear of entries of that nature. Doesn't this place have any law enforcement at all?
Voice
For example: asking witches for money! Don't do that!
Voice
Auwk, the brainless nitwits.. if they'd only listen to reason it would be obvious that I wasn't in league with any pirates. Has anyone tried contacting them directly?
Now why would the richest duck in the world need to go begging for money? [Cough- oh... did that strange voice belong to a witch?]
Voice
[Richest...duck...? Going to assume that's some weird regional phrase. No comment.]
Voice
This whole thing is such a mess.
Is there anything else I should be aware of?
[Besides the witch and the navy, what other unexpected features were hidden here?]
Voice
Well...what do you know already? The Witch and the people she's driving crazy are the big news right now, but I can try to answer some specific questions if you can think of them.
Voice
[Now... to answer that question in the way it was intended]
Let’s start at the beginning.
First, I received this message from Scurvey Dog. Within this message I was told to inspect a fountain that would shed some light on just why we’re all here. I was also told about the Backwater Brig, and something called a Nav....and it seems to be a consensus that we’re all meant to take to the seas as quick as a whistle whether we’ve a mind to or not.
You also referenced the Brig...and Davy Jones but he’s another matter I’d like to know more about.
Then there’s this “welcoming post” for new arrivals... you mentioned a magic gem, the Piedra Roja”, that can supposedly send us home and also there's this conniving witch who offers these tremendous deals yet the cost is too high.
I learned that the local Navy is nothing but a bunch of ruthless cutthroats from the sounds of it, and that Davy Jones has made an appearance before but... that something about said appearance was unusual. It caused my informant to question the legitimacy of the encounter.
Have I left anything out..? [He said more to himself than to her] It’s a lot to take in at one time.
Voice
We don't know a whole lot about Davy Jones. He's only shown up once, to the 'first' group of people who he kidnapped...oh, four months ago? Five? Two months before I arrived, anyways. Anyways, all he said was that he wanted us to look for this Piedra Roja business and deliver it to him for some crazy reason or other. The locals have some theories about him being a ghost or magic entity or something. Other than that he makes himself scarce.
It is a lot, but you seem to know most of it! You're in better shape than most of us were. I guess the only thing I'd advise you against is getting on a boat right now. The Witch is doing some weird things to crews right now--making them really paranoid over nothing. I wouldn't trust joining a crew until we figure out what's going on there, or how to make them better.
Voice
Well there's a relief, I'd hate to think I had that much more to get caught up on.
[Pondering over her suggestion there was another way he could take to the seas and minimize the likelihood of running into an affected crewmember]
.. Or I could set out on my own.

I didn't get rich by playing it safe. I've made my success by being smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies. It'll take more than a witch to stop ol' Scrooge McDuck. [Though he's still thinking more of Magica Despell when he thinks of witches.. and diabolical as Magica may be she had her limits] Which ship is that now? I might as well look into all my options.
Voice
The Sinewave is one of the safer ones, though. Some of the other crews go out of their way to stir things up, but we're mostly just interested in getting treasure and shards and getting out of here.
Voice
[He committed the name of the ship to his memory.] It doesn’t sound like our goals would clash in the slightest. [He was interested in treasure himself] You claim the Sinewave is one of the safer ones... do you think there are any ships that should be avoided?
