You don't even need to be a sailing expert, it's pretty basic science. The mast and riggings hold up the sails, which catch the wind. Wind from behind the boat pushes it forward, while wind from the sides can be redirected to give the ship forward propulsion.

You just can't sail straight into the wind. Kinda' have to zig zag it to your location.
