Slaughtering turkeys is a common tradition for this holiday, then? I don't suppose anyone got too attached to theirs, or decided to save it in a pen in case future rations become scarce.

[Holidays weren't the best times to try and get people to think ahead.]

I find it curious that we would be run out of the harbor only to be provided with a feast once at sea.

Humans tend not to form emotional attachments to animals that they intend to eat.

No, but people don't tend to eat their pets. I was simply wondering if any had become that.

Humans don't keep turkeys at pets. They're usually livestock.

You'd be surprised. Pigs are also livestock, but sometimes kept as pets. At least some breeds. It would depend on if a crewmate was forceful enough about it.

That is not unheard of.

The reasons for it might be.

Those reasons are your own. I'm sure you believe it necessary.

Immortality grants a certain perspective most humans lack. I was able to witness the long-term effects of my actions. The question now is if it was worth it.

I can only imagine how that would be.

I have been able to bear witness to the results of some of my own future actions, but only due to being brought here. Immortality seems more like a punishment than anything.

The punishment is of my own doing. More distressing was the ability to see many of humanity's more unfortunate traits more obviously, such as humanity's refusal to learn from its own mistakes, and its insistence on constantly its long history of war and evil.

History shows enough of this, but seeing it first hand would be infinitely frustrating.

As a soldier, I can tell you that focusing only on the negative will get you nowhere. It's the positives that you have to fight and push for or else you will see nothing worth redeeming.

Humans have only the time they're given. Decisions are made quickly. People look to get the most of the life they have, even if this means that others aren't allowed to. That is the unfortunate aspect of mortality.

Allowing human nature to fester like that will ensure nothing ever changes.

So will giving up on them.

Until the world revives, just as any ill creature can.

Humans have a lot of potential still. Most of it untapped.

It is an age-old argument.

One I have yet to see come true.

One can't merely watch and expect to make a difference.

I am becoming increasingly aware of that.

What would you do instead?

I don't know, yet.

I would start small, whatever you do.

I do suppose that would have been a wise idea, sir.

That said, this world does seem to bear peculiarities in how things function.

It does. And it does so in a way that I find concerning.
