[The Doctor's voice finally gets closer to the journal, clearly he was doing something on the other side of his workshop.]

Hallo everyone! I think I've got it running now. Yes. That should do it! I'll just flip the switch. Thought I'd record it for posterity...

[The ship lurches a bit, and picks up a little bit of speed. Not much, but a bit. Enough to maybe get them out of a doldrum.]

Haha! Now we're talking! [There's a satisfied clap.]

Yes, that will do it. That will go nicely. Alright...well, the first project is completely. It's just a simple motor, but we won't be stuck in dead water anytime soon. And it makes toast too. Goes ding when it's done.

*At first, Selphie's just giggling, so amused to hear the Doctor sounding so excited. There's a thud as Selphie lands on the floor when the ship lurches, but when she speaks she sounds like she's smiling*

Awesome! Go you! But... how come it makes toast?

Because toast is lovely, and I needed a heat-sink. Didn't want it getting too hot, so I set it up so excess heat goes right from the motor and into a toaster. No sense letting that all go to waste when we could all be having a lovely batch of toasted bread.

*Selphie groans a little as she picks herself up from the floor. When she's finally sitting on her hammock again she claps her hands*

Ooh! You're so clever, you! Got anything good to go on the toast?

*She can be such an ego stoker sometimes*

Jam. I've got grape and apple. No pear.

[He remembers. <.<]

Bleurgh! Are you serious? I mean, the fruits are fine. But in jam? Where do you even get that stuff?

*Have a heavy, over-exaggerated sigh*

You're not as clever as you look after all...

I made it myself. And if you don't like jam then you're not really a person. You might just be a Dalek.

[The smile in his voice is so obvious.]

Not feeling any strange urges to EXTERMINATE are you? [Including an exaggerated robot voice.]

I do like jam! Just the strawberry and raspberry kind!

*What the heck Doctor?That gets a laugh*

[His voice gets a bit strained for a moment, and then he laughs weakly.]

No. A Dalek is probably the most evil creature in the universe. They hate everything, but especially the good things. Nasty, unpleasant creatures.

Aww! It's so cute that you make jam!~ But that sounds like a deal to me!

Urgh, those sound really mean. Do they look really gross too? I'll blow them all to smithereens if I see them!

You'll never see one, at least not one's real body. They wear a metal casing.

And they're like me...all but gone. So I doubt we'll have to worry about them here unless our friend Davy Jones is somehow able to will them out of my Time Seal.

Okay, so I should look out for creepy mean guys in metal outfits. Got it!

Urgh, that doesn't sound very fun. So let's try to not think about them!

Hopefully we won't have to. But listen. If I tell you I know about something...something bad, I want you to trust me and do what I say, alright? It's entirely possible, now that I think about it, that we could end up with some very bad creatures here.

Since Jones seems intent on pulling people in at random.

*Selphie's voice is softer when she replies, because she knows he's being serious, and very sweet too. She ought to show that she understands that*

Hmm... Lots of things. If it looks creepy and bad, then it probably is. That's a rule I pretty much live by.

Generally, I feel the same way. But some things are worse than others.

[Ace suddenly shoves the door open, holding a loaf of bread and a knife.]

[And the Doctor waves him right on over to a small control panel with slots near a series of wires and tubes. He'd expected that and was already munching on a bit of toast himself.]

Right over there. Just stick it in, and it'll let you know when it's ready.

[Ace began slicing the bread on top of a shut barrel, eying the whole engine with a bit of curiosity.]

You really used your supplies frugally. You're really amazing at crafting, Doctor!

[Ace stuck in the first two slides of bread, grinning.]

Yeah, I know.

[Zero modesty, this one.]

It's been the better part of a month, did what I could as quick as I could and it's still not perfect. But it'll keep us from having to worry about a lack of wind. Thought about a giant fan, but this seemed smarter.

[have a Thatch filling up the small door]

Care to join me in a drink or two in celebration?

[and he holds up a bottle of rum and two cups]

[He waves to the big guy.]

Pass on the alcohol, but thank you. Come in if you like, I've been brewing some root beer, so I'll just drink a bit of that instead.

Suit yourself. [more for him, in the end, so no complaints here. He takes a seat and sets the cups on the table just in case the doctor wants to use one but drinks from the bottle himself, feeling the vibration of the machine under his feet]

She's a beauty of a thing, isn't she? How long did it take you?

[He ignores the cups himself, swigging from a bottle and admiring his handiwork.]

Oh...a month? Maybe a little more. Maybe a little less. Time's so linear here that it's hard to keep track.

[He notices the lurch before he sees the entry, so by the time he opens the journal they're already moving smoothly along.]

Now there's a combination I never would've thought of.

And why not? Toast and locomotion, what's so strange about that?

Nothing, I guess, if you're a huge fan of toast.

If there's room for any additions, you should add a waffle maker.

Thought about it, but didn't have enough scrap metal. How, if you find me some iron, maybe...then we'll be in business.

...Wow, you actually did think about it, didn't you?

[Laughs.]

That's all kinds of awesome. Do you have any other ship upgrades in mind?

Well...yeah. Waffles are good.

[He likes waffles, geez.]

As for that...well...I've thought about upgrading the sails so they'll retract automatically. That'd be easy enough. But I'm open to suggestions...

That right there sounds good to me. One less thing to worry about if we get caught in another storm, right?

Right, yes. That was my thinking exactly. Better that than getting caught with our pants down, yes?

Heh, well that'd just be awkward for everyone. But yeah, I'm still getting used to sailing on a ship this big so that would definitely make things easier.

Oh? Never been at sea like this before?

Like this? No. Not for an extended amount of time, and not on a large ship like this one. And the only other pirate ship I've been on, I didn't hang around very long.

Ah. Well. Think you've got your sealegs at least?

Oh yeah, I'm fine! I mean, I grew up on an island, I'm used to being out on the water. Just not, uh. [Tries to remember what the heck type of ship they have.] On a brig sloop? That's what this is, right? And living on it, that's new. But I'm good.

Yeah, I understand that. This is the longest I've been at sea myself. Longest I've dealt with...linear...time ever, too. But it's not so bad. Yo-ho-yo-ho, and all that, right?

Yo-ho, indeed... Nah, it's not bad at all. Ace and them are different than other pirates I've met in the past, though. Not quite as...swashbuckling. His hat is cooler, too. No giant plume thing going on.

Yeah, they're...a lot less stereotypical and scurvy ridden. It's a nice change, really.

I can definitely appreciate them being less scurvy ridden.

Nasty thing, scurvy. Not quite so bad as space scurvy, of course...but considerably more common.

At least we don't have to worry about that. Probably. I think we've got enough citrus...

...I didn't know space scurvy was a thing. As in, a thing that's different from regular scurvy.

Oh yeah, definitely. Similar symptoms, of course...but more severe.
