Four possibilities:
new kind of nightmare
illusion
psychotic break with extreme delusions/hallucinations
reality
All of these are extremely possible. Three of them, I can't do anything about. So, I'm going to assume all of this is actually real. If it's not, well, then I'm either dead anyway or safely strapped down to a bed and on meds.
So. My name is Alex. I'm from Rhode Island.
Read the little welcome message from "Scurvey Dog" and looked at the fountain with its poem or whatever.
I know jackshit about sailing, but I'm pretty good at archery, learning swordfighting, and I can definitely pull my own weight with physical labor. So. Yeah.
[Action:
Alex can mostly be found milling around near Backwater Brig and a few inns, checking prices.
She really is as calm as she sounds, though she's a curious creature, peeking into different places. She can be caught around most parts of the town at some point in the day. After the sun sets, good luck finding her. Though she'll be answering the journal throughout the night.]

I don't go outside after dark. Sorry.
[This place is too new to venture out the first night. The journal is actually really helpful because it provides a measured exposure to acquaint her overloaded night senses with this place.]

I don't know what you're talking about.

[Like never. Never sounds like a really good idea.]

Where's Rhode Island?
[What? It might be near by, which would explain his not knowing THIS island, and the smell of the sea was wrong too.]
[written]
I don't think it's anywhere around here. And if this is a totally different world? It might not even exist here.
[Different world... possibly different time in the same world... She's not really looking for logic in all this.]
[written]
Wait, different world? How do you figure?
[okay, so maybe he should look more into the things around him. it makes SENSE, since it smells SO very wrong.]

[sorry, he tends to focus on one thing at a time...] So Rhode isn't an Island? [and then change his mind completely!]
[written]
[And saying that just makes her more sure this is like one of those classic fantasy stories -- where someone's magically transported into another world.
Very Through the Looking Glass, really.]
It's not actually. I don't know why it's called Rhode Island, actually. It's attached the mainland pretty securely.
[written]
[This United States Island must be pretty impressively big if they have little islands attached to it securely. Whoa.]
Sounds like someone named it wrong. Perhaps misdirection.
